I'd like a deal based around one of our offensive d(Babchuk/Corvo/Rodney) for Stafford or one of Buffalos extra dman. The proposal is not enough value for Vanek. Vanek would command Jeff Skinner and probably Ruutu and a pick.

A few things:

1) On a team like the Sabres where some of our best top 6 forwards couldn't get more than a point in the playoffs, Vanek shined with oodles of heart, grit and character before his injury, and even came back, still injured, and contributed more than most of our top 6. Not to mention his yearly contributions on the PP and in general. He's not going anywhere, and not for a very hefty price.

2) Vanek is a part of our GM's precious "core". They're given cushy jobs and all the time in the world to develop. The odds of anyone within this core being shipped out is very, very slim... even if we do have the occasional underachiever that could probably use a change of scenery *coughdrewstaffordcough* in exchange for something we need more.

3) Losing Vanek for anything but a sure improvement to our roster would be a risk. Our GM doesn't take risks, ever... unless it comes in the form of losing UFA's in the offseason.

Hell no from the canes. This year the canes are gonna see what the kids can do. They aren't trading them away now. Definitely not for a 7 million dollar winger, regardless of the fact he can score.

I've already stated that Staal is worth more than Vanek, and, if a trade were to even be considered, by either team, with Vanek involved, Staal would have to be involved based on thier respective skill levels. How do you account for the -3 from Staal as opposed to Vaneks +39 on a career level? Do you honestly believe the system they play is the same?

Get over yourself little man, move along, NEXT.
you really think Vanek is a better two way player because of his career +/-?

i suppose you dont realize that over the last 3 seasons, Vanek only has a +3, while staal has a +17.

get over yourself buddy, there value is not as close as you think

Actually their Value to their respected teams are pretty much dead on. For as much as Miller is valued to the Sabres, Vanek is that much valued to the offense. IF he wasn't on our team then there would be nobody on this team that teams would be afraid of.

Staal is a Franchsie Center to build a team around. Guy has all-world talent along with being a leader.

No way either are going anywhere...But imagine if they played together, Yikes

Uh, actually it's not. Staal is an elite center, plays both PP and first unit PK, and is team captain to boot. Vanek is an elite scorer who is a couple notches below Staal defensively (although he is improving and could close the gap considerably) who shies away from a leadership role.

Vanek for Staal. A no brainer from a Buffalo perspective, but a raw deal for Carolina fans. Start the bidding at Vanek and Roy, and then fill in around the edges.

Vanek had an off-year mainly due to lots of nagging injuries, and this is what happens? Joe Corvo and a couple prospects? Really? I like Zach Boychuk but come on.

I'm not opposed to moving Vanek's salary. But not for a deal like this.

However, a Sabres fan in this thread said they'd rather dress Sekera or Butler or Weber over Corvo.

Are you serious? Niether Sekera nor Butler could lock down the 6th defenseman slot on the depth chart. Ruff was alternating them in the last quarter of the season and into the playoffs. Sekera some how won that battle. It seems Ruff was hoping that Butler would take control of the situation, but the kid couldn't do it, and Sekera was shoddy in the playoffs at best. Corvo would be an upgrade over the both of them without a doubt.

As for Weber, he just signed his qualifiying offer a little over a month ago and considering the amount of NHL games he's played as well as his age, I don't think he can play in Portland without having to clear waivers. He wouldn't clear waivers.

A move has to be on the horizon for the Sabres, even if it's a deal that's as simple as flipping Sekera or Butler for a pick. Weber needs to win that 6th spot. Otherwise, he could be the one that is dealt. I just love the toughness and grit Mike Weber would bring. If he makes the team, the Sabres defense will be much, much tougher than its been in a very long time.
