edit

I myself am in favor of honoring sweaters #'s and players who wore them. Rather then retire them

All #'s should be unretired imo and honored cept in case of death while playing forthe team or serious injury while on team.

Think how inspired some players would be to wear a former greats #

Offcourse if I was manager I would be choosey on whom got what sweater #'s.

Retired Numbers

Number Honoured Player Seasons Played

1 Turk Broda/Johnny Bower 1936-43, 45-52/1958-70

5 Bill Barilko 1946-1951

6 Irvin "Ace" Bailey 1927-1934

*Note--Damian Rhodes was wearing #1 during the 94-95, but has shoulder patches honouring both players. The patches are slightly different in style to reflect the logo at the time the honoured goalie played. Very Nice.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bill Barilko

After scoring the overtime goal in game 5 of the 1950-51 Stanley Cup playoffs to win the Cup, Bill Barilko disappeared on a fishing trip that summer. Immortalized in a Tragically Hip song, the Toronto Maple Leafs did not win another Stanley Cup until his body was discovered in 1962.

Irvin "Ace" Bailey

One of the flashier Maple Leafs in their history, "Ace" Bailey suffered a terrible injury from a body-check from behind by Eddie Shore. Some have said the check was the result of an attempt to injure Bailey by Shore for a previous occurrance. Nevert heless, Bailey was immediately hospitalized and almost died as a result of the check. He could not risk playing hockey ever again, and so the NHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs held a benefit game to raise funds for him and his family. This game became the predecesor to the annual All-Star games.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honoured Numbers

Number Honoured Player Seasons Played

7 Francis "King" Clancy, Tim Horton 1930-37/ 1949-1950, 51-70

9 Ted Kennedy 1942-55, 56-57

10 Syl Apps 1936-1948

I am currently polling the leafs board on what player sweater #'s should be honored in the future.

I would honour salming's vaives clarks gilmours &sundin

Philadelphia Flyers have four retired numbers.

#1 Bernie Parent

#4 Barry Ashbee

#7 Bill Barber

#16 Bob Clarke

None have been worn since their retirement and no one has come close to having theirs retired since. Lindros seemed like a lock and one point but thats not happening now. Maybe out of the current Flyers Desjardins and possibly Leclair have a shot if they don't get run out of town on bad terms. But if Mark Howe didn't get in I doubt either of those do.

LA Kings:

16- Marcel Dionne

18- Dave Taylor

30- Rogie Vachon

99- Wayne Gretzky

Note: no one has worn #4 since Rob Blake got traded, and I think it's a pretty safe bet #20 will be hanging up there as well.

Also for the Flyers, for honored, add #31 for Pelle Lindbergh, for whatever reason Clarke won't give Lindbergh due recognition and retire the number even though he died and Clarke said he won't give out the number while he is GM. Maybe in 2 years for the 20th anniversary for his death. If it was good enough for Barry Ashbee (who no disrespect, he was a great player for the organization), I don't know why it's not for Lindbergh, I guess because he didn't win a Cup, which is why #2 or #27 aren't up there because Mark Howe and Ron Hextall arguably after Clarke, Barber and Parent are next 2 'ledengary' players in franchise history.

Also honored in the past: #5 for Dmitri Tertyshny in 1999-2000.

I know more for other teams, but I'll let their fans add their stories for their players.

Although for the Wild, I know they retired #1, 'for the fans' which I think was really stupid.

meh, count on #8 being up there, regardless of the post I just made. However #2 and #27 not being retired have stirred much debate Howe and Hextall retired.

Vancouver Canucks

Retired: #12 Stan Smyl
Honoured: #11 Wayne Maki

Will be retired: #16 Trevor Linden

after that we'll have to see how the player's careers end. Trevor should be a lock though.

NJ has none retired, though there are two that should be retired: #3 Ken Daneyko, #15 John MacLean

Though, nobody has or ever will wear #13.... Lou believes it's bad luck.

The circumstances surrounding Barry Ashbee (number 4) and Pelle Lindbergh (31) are at opposite ends of the spectrum (bad pun, I know). Ashbee's career ended in the 1974 semifinals against the Rangers (about three weeks prior to the Flyers winning their first Cup) when a puck hit him square in the eye (Bernie Parent's career ended, ironically against the Rangers due to a stick hitting his eye in 1979). Ashbee was subsequentially diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in 1977. He didn't make any of those choices.

Lindbergh's death (one we all know how) is quite different than that of Ashbee. I recall the Boston Celtics didn't issue the number 31 to any player a few years after Len Bias (their high draft choice) died of drugs right after the draft and he never played for them. I think the Flyers should retire 31 if for nothing else a reminder of the stupidity of drinking and driving --it is a mistake we all could make at some time.

#8 Mark Recchi will not be retired.

Hextall is far from being one of the Flyers two next best players after Clarke, Barber and Parent.

There are at least 5 better Flyers before Hextall should get nominated.

Bobby Hull - 9

Dale Hawerchuk would have been a shoe-in as well.

Retired

#21 Michel Briere
#66 Mario Lemieux
#99 Wayne Gretzky[/b]

Honored
None

As far soon-to-be retired...who knows. There's quite a few of players worthy...but will they get it? Jagr is a lock, and Francis should be.

Montreal

Retired:
#1 Jacques Plante
#2 Doug Harvey
#4 Jean Beliveau
#7 Howie Morenz
#9 Maurice Richard
#10 Guy Lafleur
#16 Henri Richard

Numbers that should and probably will be retired:
#19 Larry Robinson (should be the next retired, it's pretty much a guarantee)
#23 Bob Gainey (I don't know if he'll allow it under his tenure as he doesn't seem like the type to honor himself, but how can you not retire his number?)
#29 Ken Dryden (It's arguable as he didn't have a long career, but he's a great)
#33 Patrick Roy (it will eventually happen, IMO, but in a few years)

Others:
#18 Serge Savard
#12 Yvan Cournoyer

I think it's been said that Montreal will retire one number (or honor, can't remember) every season until 2009, which will be the 100th anniversary of the club. So, that in mind, that's 5 jerseys. I say they retire Robinson in 2005, Dryden in 2006, Savard in 2007, Gainey in 2008 and Roy in 2009. Just my opinion though.

Blackhawks:
#1 Glenn Hall
#9 Bobby Hull
#18 Denis Savard
#21 Stan Mikita
#35 Tony Esposito
#99 Wayne Gretzky

Many hawk fans want to see #3 Keith Magnuson retired, and hopefully, one day, #15 will be retired

#7 Ted Lindsay
#9 Gordie Howe
#10 Alex Delvecchio
#12 Sid Abel

Unofficially Retired:
#6 Larry Aurie
#16 Vlad Konstantinov

-You can bet your life #19 won't be worn by another Red Wing after Stevie retires.
-#5 may also be retired by Detroit, some day down the line.

Whenever Sakic, Forsberg and Foote retire #19, 21 and 52 will be out of circulation,

There are three numbers retired by the Nordiques (Stastny's is the only one I can remeber off the top of my head,) but they have been back in use since the team relocated to Colorado to some contraversey.
