www.azhockey.com has a listing of all NHL players and many European players who have numbers retired in their honor.

I heard an interview with Gerry Cheevers today and he was asked if he thought his number should be retired. His response was something like "No way. I don't belong with those guys."

Not one's been retired for Anaheim, but it's a safe bet that #9 will one day be retired. And, look for #31 to be honored someday, possibly retired. Same possibly with #35.

-You can bet your life #19 won't be worn by another Red Wing after Stevie retires.
-#5 may also be retired by Detroit, some day down the line.
I was actually going to ask Detroit fans why Hull was wearing #17, but I guess you've answered my question. It might be Holland not letting anyone wear it, but I'd think Hull wouldn't wear it anyway, and it's good of him to respect Vladdy.

Maybe #14 Theo Fleury? The only guys I could see being retired would be Theo and Al, in a few years time. Soon enough #12 as well

It's just such a corny gesture. I'm all for respecting the fans, but ugh! Not to mention that is a number typical assigned to goalies. And to think my team takes crap for retiring Ray Bourque's number.

Few additions

Boston has also retired #24 for Teddy O'Reilly.

I'm not sure has anyone used #3 in Canes after Steve Chiasson's death.

NY Islanders has retired 5 (Potvin), 9 (Gillies), 19 (Trottier), 22 (Bossy), 23 (Nyström), 31 (Smith)

Rangers has 1 (Giacomin), 7 (Gilbert) and 35 (Richter)

Early Ottawa Senators retired #8 for Frank Finnigan and I think no one has used it in current team.

There are three numbers retired by the Nordiques (Stastny's is the only one I can remeber off the top of my head,) but they have been back in use since the team relocated to Colorado to some contraversey.
Does anyone else think that Colorado retiring Bourque's number is a bit of a stretch? He only played there what a year and a bit? Should he really be on the level of guys that have been with the organization for years? Not to take away from his accomplishments as a player, but his number should only be in the Fleet's rafters in my opinion.

No Senator wears #8 so I guess that this number is already retired.

You are absolutely correct. The Avs get criticized left and right for retiring #77, even on ESPN. If the Flyers won the Cup this year, and Zhamnov retired, that doesn't mean they retire #23. Bourque wasn't even the MVP. It's nice for Bourque, but it is a joke and suitable for a public mockery.

Another example: Butch Goring and Ray Bourque are on different levels as players but the Isles snatched Goring from the Kings late in the 1979-80 season and he went on to win 4 Cups with them.

If it's just a corny gesture, it'll backfire. When you're an owner trying to bring back a hockey team to fans who felt very, very betrayed by owners (many still feel that way, and are just waiting for the other shoe to drop with this new crew), you've got to do some things to convince people you're not a sleazebag. Overt gestures of loyalty to the fans can go a long way.

Like I said...

Under normal circumstances yes, however he was the focal point of a Cup run and still is a presence around the team and city. It's as legitmate as Bourque taking the Avs cup and getting a parade in Boston. It's not like we have any illusions about him being an Av first and formost, but hell the Bruins biggest highlight in years was prbably Bourque hosting the cup.

Hey players gett their numbers retired for dying.

I think a better move would have been to retire number of the old North Stars liek Dino, Bellows, Broten for example and reclaim the history from Dallas.
