OT: Should The NHL Season Start Earlier?

Do you think the NHL season should start sooner? I say start camp the 1st weekend after every labour day which will allow NHL players a week to get their kids settled into school and start camp the following weekend. Players are better conditioned in the off season nowadays and don't need long camps and 9 pre season games to get ready for the start of the season. Have a 1 week camp 4 pre season games and start the season by the last week of September and end the season no later than the last week of May.

I do agree with less preseason games, 6 max.

The Leafs have 9 pre season games jammed in between Sept 21st and Oct 2nd and it becomes a bore after about the 4th pre season game and the potential for injuries before the season even gets underway increases.

Tues., Sept. 21 vs. Ottawa
Wed., Sept. 22 vs. Ottawa
Thurs., Sept. 23 vs. Philadelphia
Fri., Sept. 24 vs. Philadelphia
Sat., Sept. 25 at Buffalo
Mon., Sept. 27 vs. Buffalo
Wed., Sept. 29 at Ottawa
Fri., Oct. 1 at Detroit
Sat., Oct. 2 vs. Detroit

Pre season games are a way for teams to make money.

Not sure if many realize but Subscribers have to buy Pre-season tix as part of their season package.

I would love the season to start around September 15th and finish in late May.

I second this notion. NHL 11 can only do so much for that month of waiting

Yeah I guess, I think anywhere from 5 - 7 is good, just so the coaches can organize lines and so the rosters can be finalized.

yes, if for no other reason than to stop having SCF games in July, everything should be said and done by the end of May ideally, beyond that, unless your team is still in it, from general fan-base and not a die-hard perspective, nobody's watching, it's just smart business sense (and in T.O. it would certainly help the Blue Jays if the finals were done sooner rather than later).

Canadians after a brutal winter do NOT like sitting indoors watching hockey for 3 hours beyond the last week of May. The NFL i believe is talking about going to 2 pre season games from 4 and the regular season goes to 18 from 16...sounds better and the NHL needs to improve their schedule as well!!

I prefer the NHL season to start in October (hockey in September is associated with training camp and pre-season), but why they are waiting until the 7th this year to start is beyond me. Start the season on Oct. 1 no matter which day (2nd if it falls on a Sunday as to not go head-to-head with the NFL) and go from there. There's no reason for such a delay. Compund that in at the end of the season and that's why the NHL finishes in mid-June.

Mid sept is too early late sept would be great. they only need 3-4 pre season games. if they want the money for the extra games add it to the season

I agree that the season should start around the same time as the NFL, just after Labour Day. I'm ready for it by then, and with the NFL and school starting up, it seems like a good time for Fall stuff to begin.

Starting earlier also means ending earlier. September is a little early for hockey, but I'd rather see early-season games in September than playoffs in June.

I don't believe the players are paid for exhibition games. They would be for extra regular season games.
