Why did Chris Clark switch to #71?

I was looking over your roster the other day and noticed Clark switched from #11 to #71. Obviously #71 is the #17 he wore in Washington flipped. However, why, after going through all of last season with #11, did he choose to flip his old number and switch in the offseason? No one wore #71 in Columbus last season, so why did he switch now? He could have just changed his number when he was traded to you guys. Just an odd thing I was wondering about is all.

For good luck, maybe? The Jackets could use a little good luck.

Couldn't tell you. Maybe he had a moment of "Oh...they've got 71."

Kris Russell changed from #2 to #10 part-way through 2008-09 and Anton Stralman wore #5 for one game last year before bumping up to #6, though.

Because someone told him that was the number that Backman wore.

Meh, it works for Malkin, why not give it a shot?

My only hope is that when we play the Pens, he doesn't skate over to the bench during a stoppage and ask for Gino's autograph.

Yes, but Russell had worn 10 his whole life.

Has Clark ever worn 71?

I assumed we're planning on hanging Brule and Paul Manning's numbers to the rafters...

I think he gave #11 to Matt Calvert.

That's not why he didn't take 17. He's the vet, he could take it if he wanted...

He just knows he'll never live up to the true CBJ #17 Legend, Tomi Kallio

Yes, the ghost of Kallio would haunt him forever...

*But I'm not dead yet!*

Shut it, Kallio.

Perhaps he made the switch so he would finally get a dedicated thread here.

It's how many games he plans to miss due to injury this season.

Then he needs to trade Klesla. It is more likely Klesla will miss 71 games.

But then he would have to miss 97, and that's a hard number to meet ...
