Remember in one game against the Oilers where he give us a 5-3 powerplay, all by himself?

Hate dragging up threads but here is a recent tidbit from Strickland.

Quote:
Vancouver forward Raffi Torres can be added to the list of players who turned down significantly more money from their original team before earning less in the open market. Before signing a one year $1 million deal with the Canucks Torres turned down $2 million a year from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Interesting. Must have been some hard feelings after C-Bus traded him, or he just wanted the shot at the Cup with Vancouver?

Did he turn it down during the season when he was with CBJ or did they make him another offer after July 1st?

He was having a pretty good season going in Columbus so I could see him thinking he was worth a bit more than $2 million at the time.

He said "before [signing the Canucks contract]", so I assume that means after July 1st.

Earlier he said that he turned down the offer from his "original team," which I would imagine implies that he was on CBJ at the time, "before earning less on the open market," which I think means it was before he hit UFA status. To me it sounds like CBJ thought they were going to lose him in July and moved him.

sorry to bump this thread but. Raffi has been "inconsistently bad so far." i think after he scored his hattrick in edmonton. He has become a lazy floater. Should van keep him? thinking he'll at least at some point in the playoffs turn it up a notch Or gillis made yet another mistake in the f.a pool and decides to waive/trade him?

Torres has been a perfect 3rd/4th liner for this team especially at the price tag of 1 million. Anyone wanting to waive Torres is an idiot.

Torres is one of those players that you don't trade away looking at a long playoff run.

im hoping he reverts back to his old-self that used to score 27 in edmonton a few years ago.. or the 06 guy that scored 14? in 22 playoff games. that would be great. INCONSISTENCY is the only problem with raffi. he will turn it on when he wants to.. but other times he's just a floater. maybe a nagging injury?

Many of those were only mistakes in hindsight.

I'm reserving my judgement until the playoffs but so far I have absolutely no qualms with Torres. I was expecting a gritty bottom six guy who would chip in about 15 goals/30 points and that seems to be exactly what he is.

First of all a couple of those were trades. The O'Brien trade was actually a very good trade and a clear win for the Canucks. Schneider? Who cares? He was out of here quite quickly. Ryan Johnson didn't work out but it looked like a good signing at the time. Bernier was another trade and once again it looked like a very good trade at the time.

3rd lines around the NHL are not filled with 27 goal scorers. There is only so many goals per game to go around. The majority of power play time is filled by the twins and Kesler. Raymond is the biggest example of a players numbers being effected by a lack of quality PP time and Torres is certainly in the same boat. If every player on the team produced the "consistency" and offensive output expected by some fans on this board the Canucks would average about 6 goals per game.

He may have been at risk of being a cap casualty once Salo made his return, but with Edler now on LTIR, I don't see that happening. Seeing as Gillis is trying to create a culture where players want to play here, and considering that Torres took a pay cut to come here, I think he will be kept on the roster for the rest of the year. Besides that, despite his recent slump, he's still 7th in points among Canucks forwards.

So if I have this straight some want Samuelsson, Raymond and Torres gone. Heck given there is a thread they want Malhotra bumped down as well.

Heck of a lot of changes but I can understand it given where the team is in the standings. They are in obvious need of a shake up. Oh wait...

I think he is a terrible fit for the 3rd line, he is not a checking forward he needs to be on the 3b line with Hodgson and Tambellini and put Glass with Malhotra and Hansen to form a formidable checking line.

I agree, Torres is not a good fit when you look at how that 3rd line is being used. Torres is as bad a defensive player as the Canucks have and he's being used in extremely difficult situations on a nightly basis - a recipe for trouble come playoff time.

How many people want to see Torres re-signed? I just don't see where he fits in the top 9.

He's making $1M gimme a break. If the guy scores 15 goals its full value. His benefit to the team will be in the playoffs, especially in a physical series where we need guys to forecheck and get gritty. You aren't going to see that from Raymond, Sammy etc. And Glass/Hodgson/Hansen are inexperienced.

This team in the past was too soft. Now we have a good balance of grit and skill. We could use a more experienced guy on the 4th line but we'll see what happens

We'll see how he does in the playoffs, but so far, Taylor Pyatt > Raffi Torres, IMO.

What else do you want from a guy making 1 Mil?

15 ish goals, and known to be a hard forchecker and hitter, sounds pretty good come play off time.

No need to run and hide - Taylor Pyatt is a better player than Torres...
