Mahotra seems like a real genuine guy, and Gillis would most likely ask about Torres and his time in Columbus.

These two played together the entire year for the Blue Jackets in 2008/09.

If Torres was a real jackass, Mahotra would most likely mention that to Gillis.

Good move get another bottom 6 player who can move into the top 6.

Seriously though, if its at 1 mill per, great signing. This is exactly the kind of sand paper depth we have been talking about, and need. In terms of how it effects Hodgson, I really dont see it as a detriment to his development, assuming he makes the team. Hodgson can play the wing on the second or third line still. It doesn't change anything in terms of his depth on the team.

I just hope this doesn't effect signing Mitchell. I'm confident in Gillis though, and don't think it will.

Interesting thing to note. The 2nd round pick the Sabres traded for Torres was the Canucks 2nd round pick which they traded to Buffalo for Bernier who is the player that Torres is essentially replacing in the Canucks lineup

Let's take a second and go through the pros and cons, shall we?

Pros:
He's a proven 15-20 goal scorer
He has playoff experience (with the Oilers in 2006)
He's gritty
He's a pest
He's cheap

Cons:
Needs to work on conditioning and consistancy

I don't know about you guys, but I'm fine with that.

Another big con has been his injury history, seems to have missed 20 games a year or so. But still managed 19 goals in 60-odd games last year.

If we can sign another bottom 6 veteran for ~800K, it'd only cost us 1-2K to upgrade from a Perrault/Rypien, that would be super duper.

We need another penalty killing center on the 4th line to take draws when Kesler or Malhotra are in the box. Hodgson probably eventually will fill that hole, if he makes the team, but as it stands we only have two proven NHL PK centers on this team. Bolduc is still a bit of a rookie, and I don't feel confident enough with the guy in that role considering how the PK killed us in the playoffs.

good pick up if he keeps his head on straight--something he lost in edmonton

Hammy, Ballard, Malhotra, and now Torres? Gillis has had a productive off-season

The 2 points in 4 GP Torres had in the playoffs for Buffalo tied him for 3rd on team playoff scoring, so it's not like everyone but him were scoring.

Looks a lot better now than it did a couple hours ago.

Where is Hansen? Glass and Rypien? Glass and Rypien = decent AHL players.

Since entering the league as a full time player (2003-2004) Torres has averaged 20 goals per season over an 82 game season.

This guy definately has been a solid 15-20 goal scorer. Even during the 2008-2009 season (which was his worst season offensively) he averaged 19 goals over the full 82 game season (scored 12 goals in 51 games).

Definately a pretty solid player that should get some 2nd unit PP time and at that price he's well worth it.

This is a great signing. Torres at worst will be worth the $1M the Canucks will be paying him, and this move has great potential to be a steal partway through the season.

Unless Torres has changed drastically since his time with the Oilers, you guys are likely to have moments of frustration with him though. He's the type of player that will score 5 goals in 7 games and then go 15 without hitting the back of the net. He is an extremely streaky player, but lucky for you guys, you have plenty of forwards who can put up points when Torres is in a slump.

And for those of you slotting him on a checking line, that probably isn't the best idea. His defense was never what you would call splendid in Edmonton, so unless he's changed, he's likely more suited to a softer minutes role. I would probably throw him on the fourth line with the understanding that he gets bumped to a top-6 line if someone is struggling on any given night.

All in all, this signing is yet another really solid move by the Canucks this offseason. You should be quite happy with this one, a low-risk, high-reward gamble that the team can certainly afford to make.

Glass and Rypien are better than AHL-level players.

Although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at a Danish poster saying something rash in response to a perceived slight to Hansen..
