If another team signs Marc Staal to a 5M+ Offer Sheet...?

If another team signs Marc Staal to a 5M per year offer sheet, do you match or take the (5) first round picks*?

*EDIT - amended for actual compensation*

An offer between $4,637,944 and $6,183,925 would only get the Rangers a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

We'd really get 5 first round picks compensation?

if the NHL changed compensation to reflect that we would get 5 first round picks for Marc Staal, then yes, I would take the picks.

However, since compensation for that sized contract is a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd, I'd have to match.

I believe Sather said he would match anything. I highly doubt Staal gets offer sheeted to begin with.

No GM will offer sheet a NY Ranger while Glen Sather is the GM. It's nothing to worry about.

Staal isn't worth the salary + picks it would take for the Rangers to consider not matching. No reason to do the negotiating for the Rangers by presenting Staal with an offer sheet. Furthermore any team that does that better watch their own RFA's (esp in 2012). Slats doesn't forgive or forget stuff like that, he's old school. Delusional and senile, but old school.

First off, there are 3 Staal brothers in the NHL, ours you have been looking at the back of his jersey for 3 years. man that bugs me.

Second, Sather has already addressed this issue. He will match any offer sheet thrown at Staal, likely over 5 mil.

Depends on many different things its not as simple as yes or no. First off its a 1st 2nd and 3rd not 5 first rounders. Second is it from a team that's likely to finish at the bottom and yeild us picks 5 35 and 65 or a cup winning team that gets us 30 60 and 90. That's like a 2nd 3rd and 4th with how high they are. Third are we confident that we can find a defenseman to replace staals presence against other teams top players ( which is a almost certain no). Fourth just because a team tenders him a sheet doesn't mean he signs it. Odds are he does but its not 100 percent. Fifth, if the team tendering the sheet to staal finishes in the bottom and the rangers receive their top 5 overall pick and say the rangers make the playoffs, if that team has any rfa's of note would you than send an offer sheet to said player and find some one to replace staal while gaining position in the draft?

Only thing is forsure, buffalos gm is a fool for not letting vanek go for 4 1st round picks.

Sather may have lost a lot of respect over the years, but no GM wants him as an enemy.

Any offer will be matched.

Take the picks. Its an overpayment for Staal. The issues coming with the high salary sort of offset the issues of not having him on the team. I love him and hope he stays forever, but he is not worth 5 first rounders. It's not an easy decision, but it's the one I'd make.

IT'S NOT 5 FIRST ROUND PICKS. It's a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd. I'll keep Staal thank you.

True, yet caution has to be exercised. That is why Sather keeps remaining cap money unspent. I'd say Sather's inactivity on the marketplace is an indirect proof that Rangers do intent to match.

Match from anything From 4 to 5.5. Anything over that is overpayment. Take the picks, trade those to get what else we need, then poach that teams top RFA either now or later on.

Even though it is an over-payment, If someone offered him 6 mill I would match (as long as it was for like 3 years or less)

Our team would look like s*** without him. Our D would be one of the worst in the league... We don't have the scoring dynamic. It would just be Henrik

The compensation is not as good as Staal.

Staal at 5 mil per, on a long term deal would be worth it.

I wouldn't give that much unless we had to match an offer sheet, though.

4-4.5 for 6 years.

If someone offered him 6 mil per year, it would be for a minimum of 6 years. No one is giving him that much money without getting at least 2 UFA years in the deal.

Geez, I'm a Staal fan...but for 6M/per I'd rather have Kovalchuk. lol

Compensation for 6M is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
