I gotta give credit to DL for getting a guy to come here when he had other obvious and probably better options. I had all but given up hope when it became known we were up against the caps, sharks and nucks.

The money is a bit high but for two years it is definitely doable, still have quite a lot of cap space left.

Never lead the team in points, but always lead the team in heart. He'll be a great mentor to Doughty and Johnson, something that's often overlooked when signing veteran players. Sundin's time in Vancouver was above average but it was even better when you think about what he did for Kesler's offensive game.

So the Kings had to overpay for both of their UFA signings...why? I'd much rather play in sunny and beautiful Southern California than 90% of the other cities in the NHL. The Kings aren't even a bad team anymore..I mean 100 points and they STILL have to overpay. I just don't get it.

I'm happy with this signing. I remember Mitchell doing a great job on Kopitar every time the Kings played the Canucks. The guy is a great shutdown defender. Not much of a risk since the Kings have the space and they were desperate. It was either Mitchell for 3.5 or Randy Jones/someone similar/rookie...I'll take Mitchell.

Kings D is looking good once Greene comes back, especially on the defensive side of the puck with three pure shutdown defenders and two young guys who can more than handle their own. Offense from the back end might be a problem unless Johnson plays like he played at the end of last season/playoffs. If Johnson has a semi-breakout season, Doughty does Doughty, and the Kings get some offensive production out of that six slot then watch out.

Doughty-Scuderi
Johnson-Mitchell
Greene-Hickey/Drewiskie

Definitely, without a doubt, the best defense in the division . . . on paper

I like how this video also shows Mr. Bieksa getting completely owned before Mitchell saves the day.

On the signing itself: WOOOOOOOOOOO!

Great signing for you guys. Your fans are one of the better groups on here (ie not too many of your guys run around to our boards during the playoffs posting annoying crap) so I am glad he went to your team and not San Jose. Not that San Jose's fan base is bad, I just dislike their team more than yours...

Anyways, good luck to Willie in LA, it will be weird seeing him facing off against us on opening night.

Luckily we still have Bieksa, so I think we know who the real winners here are....

....

sigh.

PS please feel free to bring back Randy Jones to your team should LA ever meet up with Vancouver in the playoffs.

That will change soon...I have a feeling we will meet again in the playoffs...and the regular season meetings will be nasty.

Just as long as you guys bring Andrew Alberts along for the ride.

Hahah, I have no doubt harsh words will be exchanged, but both franchises have nothing really to be proud of in our history, so it's hard for us to get into too much of a pissing contest. Though if the internet was around back in the early 90's like it is today, maybe it would have made for a funner rivarly, with both sides yelling at each other during our franchises high points.

And well played to the gentleman who used Andrew Alberts to cancel out Randy Jones.

Damnit.

2 years isn't too much of a risk. Good player.

Anyway, I like the signing and like everyone else. Hope he stay healthy and I feel a lot better about this team now with our defensemen rounded out.

Doughty-Scuderi
Johnson-Mitchell
?????-Greene

I think we will see Drewiske be paired up with Hickey/Voynov until Greene comes back. Personally, I want to see Hickey make the team, since he has good puck handling skills.

Either way though, once everyone is healthy on the back end along with a Bernier/Quick tandem...we've vastly improved over last year on that front. The offensive scoring front is a problem still, but could be upgraded soon or at the deadline. I like where we are headed...

Willie Mitchell looks and sounds a little bit like Dexter Morgan!

About time. This is a great signing as long as he recovers from the injuries last year. He eats up a lot of PK minutes and blocks a lot of shots; a tough customer to boot.

Jack Johnson has to be the happiest guy on the Kings right now. He finally has a defensive partner because he'll either be with Scuderi or Mitchell. Assuming Willie is okay and Greene comes back fine, our d-corps looks strong, real strong.

Scuderi - Doughty
Johnson - Mitchell
Prospect - Greene
Drewiskie

Welcome aboard Willie!

From Mitchell's point of view, he stays in the West, he gets 2 years, he gets to play with Kopitar-Doughty, he will be in the top 4 and I'm sure Hextall/Lombardi helped sell him. Hextall, as a player had a similar persona to Willie.

About time we took a risk, I love this signing. He is the perfect partner for Jack.

He has an injury concern, but just like I said with Gaborik, you are never going to get anywhere in hockey or in life without taking risks.

And the $$ is a bit more than I expected but not ridiculous like Smyth and Williams, $3.5 mill for a #4 d-man is well within the cap structure.
