Philly D vs Pitt D

With Pitt really trying to upgrade their D this offseason and Philly tinkering with theirs, who has a better OVERALL defense???

Difficult to say, the Flyers top 2 and bottom 2 (or bottom 4) I'd say are better, but the Penguins 3 & 4 (assuming it's Orpik and Letang) are better than Carle and Coburn.

Id say the Flyers. Looking at it objectively its still in the Flyers favor.

Pronger > Martin
Timonen > Orpik
Carle =/< Michalek
Coburn = Letang
Meszaros > Goligoski
O'Donnell > Lovejoy
Walker > Engelland

But when it comes down to it the Pens have NOBODY that can compete with Pronger.

Ah, Flyers, and it isn't even close. We have two no. 1 D... Pens don't have one. I like a lot of their guys, but none of 'em are real no. 1 ("alpha") guys, and that really affects everything.

Flyers can put Pronger and Timonen on the ice for 25 minutes a night (much of that not coinciding). That's a MASSIVE advantage over the Pens.

Now, we also have Leighton and Boucher in goal, so it may all be for naught.

Well, that's a useless comparison when you're talking about how the D will actually play... because how partners play out is really what makes a defense go.

Martin makes the Pitt D so much better this year, and Zyb is underrated too.

But to be honest I wouldn't swap D-corps with any other team in the league. Flyers.

The Pens top 4 are interchangeable while not having a clear number one. Flyers have a clear number 1 but may not have as solid a top 4. Bottom pairing definitely goes to Philly though.

As a Pen, Gonchar posted .77, .82, .83, .76, and .81 PPG.

Paul Martin's career high in PPG is .41.

Gonchar had his faults, but he was really really really good at the stuff he did well.

Pens went from having an A+ PP QB to lacking a legit one. That's a big deal. I mean, losing Rico neutered us.

Flyers, easily, go one by one
Pronger is WORLDS better than Martin
Timonen is much more dynamic than Michalek
Carle for now is a little better than Letang, more reliable in more situations, but Letang is going to get better.
Orpik I would take over Coburn but I do think Coburn is still maturing (as is Carle really)
Flyers bottom pairing features a steady vet (or a pretty dependable young Latvian) and a guy who could play on Pitt's second pairing or most any second pairing really.

Pittsburgh's advantages are all up the middle, but their defense is now at least adequate. If they get two competent wingers, Jesus, look out.

Hey, Shark fan here, just stumbled along this thread.

Easily Philly. Pitt doesn't have a True No.1 Defenseman, and the Flyers have 2 of them.

... the Flyers will put Pronger on the ice. That pairing will be better than any pairing the Pens will put out there.

The Flyers will then put Timonen out on the ice... that pairing will be as good or better than the Pens top pairing (depending how far Coburn has his head up his ass that week)... when Coburn is playing well, that pairing will be better (with ease) than any pairing the Pens will put on the ice.

It isn't close.

Doesn't mean we'll be a better team, but we have a better D than anyone in the East.

Meh, I get that Timonen is good, but feel that he is overrated.

Plus Kunitz is his kryptonite.

there was that big hit in game 3 of the playoff two years ago that didn't really effect the game, but yeah i see what he was trying to get at.

I think Paul Martin is a legit number one defenseman in terms of shutting people down, though he lacks the ability on offense and he can't QB the powerplay like Gonch could. I really feel that Martin is terribly underrated.

That said, the Flyers have the better D, and it's not close.

Martin is very solid, but he's more of a no. 2. A GREAT leader for your 2nd pairing, or a good guy in tandem with someone on a 1st pairing... but not an alpha, and nowhere near the offensive chops of the guy he's technically replacing.

Yea anyone can be someone's kryptonite when you fly out of nowhere and place a charging elbow on someone's jaw.
