Deslauriers Signed!

Just announced... Oiler media email

OILERS SIGN GOALTENDER DESLAURIERS

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with goaltender Jeff Deslauriers on a three-year contract.

The 6’4”, 189-pound native of St-Jean-Richelieu, QC played 50 games for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Chicoutimi Sagueneens last season, posting a 21-20-6 record. His .916 save percentage was third best among QMJHL goaltenders, while his 2.87 goals-against average ranked seventh.

Deslauriers, who was the Oilers second choice (31st overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, led the Sagueneens on an impressive playoff run in 2003-04, eventually losing out to the QMJHL league champion Gatineau Olympiques in the semi-finals. In 18 post-season games, Deslauriers was 10-8 with a 3.14 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.

Oilers’ General Manager Kevin Lowe says, “Everyone in our organization is excited about Jeff’s potential, as he is a hard-working goaltender with a great attitude. His addition will really strengthen our position in goal.”

Great news, it just hit me a minute ago that there were only a few hours left, was wondering why it was taking so long.
Thanks Guy!

WHAT? I can't hear you from this ledge I'm on!

Seriously, very good news. Deslauriers may not end up being a top flight goalie, but the scouts liked him plenty and the organization has a pretty valuable asset. Remember, he FELL to #31, he was the #1 NA goalie and rated #10 by HN, #13 by rlr.

Good day for Lowe, and a great day imo for Kevin Prendergast and that scouting group. For old guys like me, the absolute misery that was the draft is being replaced by a flicker of hope.

For that alone, they have my thanks.

I checked TSN and the Oilers' mainpage, nothing. I check this site, see this thread, and jump out of my chair. Awesome news!

Good news. We needed the kid signed to secure SOME semblance of playing depth at the goalie spot.

I would still hope we can get a kid like Schneider or Montoya this draft but even then there is always next year.

great news. I hate to be another of the great unwashed who fawn over you constantly, but thanks for the insight. I am very happy about this because the oilers could have easily made a case for not signing JDD. He is a premier prospect but the new CBA will probably make his ilk a lot cheaper.

The oilers could have easily drafted him (or an equivelent) with the Philly pick this year and paid a far lower signing bonus.

I remember during his draft year one scout referred to him as "The Octopus" due to his size and his ability to catch or kick anything heading towards an open side during scrambles as if he had about 4 arms and 4 legs. Since then Ive been intrigued. Glad to see he's on board now (Officially)

The Terms

Nice dough for JDD, putting him right between Cam Ward of Carolina and Josh Harding of Minnesota.
His deal is worth $2.450 million. He gets a $725,000 signing bonus. His salary per season is $550,000/$575,000/$600,000.

I think the stumbling point was the signing bonus... the Oilers definitely wanted it spread across the term of the deal, and it probably cost them about $100k to do it.

There is a young goalie in the San Jose system (read: where the Kiprusoffs grow) that seems to be developing really well and really quickly. He is a german kid named Patrick Ehelechner. Just finished his first season in NA with Sudbury. Bad team, but he won about every individual award possible.

If anyone has Kevin Lowe's phone number, maybe pass on the tip because this kid looks promising and he is BURIED behind Nabokov, Toskala, and Patzold. Could be got before his stock rises. Thoughts?

Good eye, and welcome to the HF boards! It's a good thing Zack Stortini plays in Sudbury too, he'll be able to tell everyone about him. I don't think anyone would have to call K-Lowe about it though . Definitely being #4 in the system of young goalies in San Jose could make him expendable down the road... interesting, we'll have to keep watch on him. Good Job.

Thanks Ehelechner has some real fans in the SJ Boards

I was looking back in the SJ Board trying to see what was being said about Kiprusoff before Sutter pulled him out of his magical hat for the Flames. I kept finding tidbits about this german kid and his amazing first year in Sudbury. Seems like a crowd-pleaser and a good citizen too.

I know we need to build some depth in the system and it BURNS me that the Flames landed a gem like Kiprusoff. Just thought I'd mention him on here.
