The swindlers who run the Florida Marlins got exposed Monday. They are as bad as anyone on Wall Street, scheming, misleading and ultimately sticking taxpayers with a multibillion-dollar tab. Corporate fraud is alive and well in Major League Baseball.
A look at the leak of the Marlins’ financial information to Deadspin confirmed the long-held belief that the team takes a healthy chunk of MLB-distributed money for profit. Owner Jeffrey Loria and president David Samson for years have contended the Marlins break even financially, the centerpiece fiscal argument that resulted in local governments gifting them a new stadium that will cost generations of taxpayers an estimated $2.4 billion. They said they had no money to do it alone and intimated they would have to move the team without public assistance.
In fact, documents show, the Marlins could have paid for a significant amount of the new stadium’s construction themselves and still turned an annual operating profit. Instead, they cried poor to con feckless politicians that sold out their constituents.
Gee, who could have seen this coming?
What a bunch of hucksters. These two should've been in prison five years ago.
******* it. My dad taught me hate of Loria and Samson since I was around 6. I only realized why I hated them a few years later. They killed the Expos, and I hope these shysters get what's coming to them.
this should shut the ignoramuses up and their 'reason' the expos left because of 'poor attendance'. these two ****ing ******** did the same thing here..though no one listened and the corrupt cartel which is MLB and dumb local businessmen bought their pathological lies
MLB "buys" the Expos from Loria for 43 million, sells the Marlins to Loria for 83 million (with 35 million loaned, 5 mm of the loan forgiven if FLA did not build them a stadium in 5 years). The former FLA owner gets the Red Sox.
5 years later MLB sells the Expos/Nats franchise to a group for over 450 million
MLB never lost a dime operating the team in Mtl. They profited the owners 400 million flipping the team.
Yep. MLB sure had to get the Expos out of Montreal. How they avoided the racketeering charges is beyond me. They're all crooks

They torpedoed the team to make sure the team shuffle would happen and the consortium of Montreal owners would fold after cash calls
Did a great job of it too:
-Fired Felipe Alou
-moved games to San Juan PR
-blocked Sept call ups to "save money"
-sent them on a 24 day road trip when they were fighting for the lead with the best "home" (MTL) record in baseball at the time
- blocked trades for Cliff Floyd for financial reasons. Basically tied Minaya's hands as GM. i.e. the other owners made sure we would not win. Fair game huh?

I also met that scummy shrimp. Came off as a used car salesman trying to talk us into upgrading our season ticket package. Kinda came across as we should spend more or the team could leave...

I hate MLB and don't watch anymore. it's a ****ing cartel of dinosaurs. was so happy to see the sport surpassed by the NFL in popularity. hopefully the nats go bankrupt. lol
Haha at MLB and their band. The cherry on top would be for MLB to fail for the fourth time or so in Washington. I gave up on baseball when the Expos left and I particurlary hate the Blue Jays for supporting contraction in 2004 as well as approving the transfer to Washington. I guess the Blue Jays who face very low attendance feel the pain just a little.
