Avs on TV this season

Altitude just came out with their broadcast schedule. They will have 76 games on their networks this year.

http://avalanche.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=536466

VS has stated that they will have 5 Avs games broadcasted.

According to my math, that leaves 1 game not broadcasted on US television this season. Any ideas on what game that will be? Hasn't every game been broadcasted since Altitude came into existence?

Found it.

Tue Dec 7, 2010 Avalanche Panthers 5:30 PM

Does not have any US telly coverage. Neither ALT or VS has picked up this game.

We play Edmonton both times on CBC.

For us French-Canadians, we play Ottawa, Montreal, Tampa Bay, and Edmonton on RDS.

IIRC there was a game early last year against Toronto that wasn't on in the US unless you had CI and got Leafs cast.

Hopefully the Panthers local station will have coverage and those with Center Ice can still watch it

Cue someone calling Kroenke cheap...

Anyway, doesn't Versus have exclusive TV rights in the US on Tuesday nights or something screwy like that. If so, I wouldn't expect any TV for this game Altitude or Fox Sports.

The NHL needs to do away with exclusivity rights as soon as possible. There is nothing wrong with being a niche sport. The NHL embraced on-line technology long before other sports. They really need to continue with this. I am looking forward to the day where instead of buying Center Ice, I can buy Colorado Avalanche (which will give me access to every game the AVs play regardless of who is broadcasting and every game the Monsters play (if broadcasted) regardless of who is broadcasting.) It's all 1's and 0's and they are already flooding the internet. Might as well cash in and get my $300 bucks a year rather than give me an opportunity to try and stumble upon some obscure feed which is advertised as free and legal.

How the hell does a game not get picked up by anybody? Isn't that one of the benefits of having your own network? So the fans can see the games and you can sell your product more easily? WTF?

I don't get it. Is there an explanation for that? IIRC there has always been a game in Nashville that never got picked up either. Why?

What's the point of the Altitude TV Network if there are games that fans of the team cannot watch without paying a couple hundred bucks to watch the local Florida station?

I'm fine with VS exclusivity rights because I figure as a fan that wants to watch all 82 games you probably picked the channel lineup with VS anyway, but not having a game picked up by any channel in the region makes no sense to me.

Are you sure Fox Sports Florida is picking up the game? I'm pretty sure that if Altitude isn't carrying the game, nobody is. It wouldn't make sense since all the TV guys travel with the team.

And I think Altitude has always carried every game that wasn't exclusive to National TV until last year when there was a conflict with Versus.

I remember FS Rocky Mountain used to not carry almost the entire SE road trip, in ATL, TB and FLA.

Maybe someone could tweet or e-mail Dater. I'm sure he could get to the bottom of it more than any of us. He seems to still have friends in high places.

I figured that even if both teams wanted to save costs, they could still come together and pick one station (either team's) to cover the game, and share the broadcast while also sharing the production cost. Both teams' fans would get to watch the game and it halves the cost of production for each team. You'd think that'd be preferable to not showing anything at all.

They can't. Or at least, last year they wouldn't let you.

But it's true. He owns the team and the channel. What on earth does Altitude show during the Nuggets and Avs offseasons? At least he can show the Avs home games. Maybe he wouldn't do that because it would dissuade fans from paying full regular season ticket prices to go watch a frikkin exhibition game.

You don't want to pay full ticket prices, he doesn't want to pay for a full crew to cover meaningless games for what is essentially a 4th rate sport in this country. Nobody but a few of us would even care to watch.

Can't say I blame him. Wait an extra two-three weeks and we'll get to see all but one of the games in HD on television.

If that's no good, the KHL starts up next week, and there should be games shown on ESPN 3, like last year. It's kind of fun to watch.

I also have a hard time believing pre-season games cost as much as regular season games, but I really don't know as I've never tried to go to a pre-season game. I find them insanely boring, tbh.

After 4 months without hockey it's the equivalent of methadone

lol I miss it too, but I just watch euro leagues starting next week.

It's not really that exciting, but at least it means something.

Also, methadone is good stuff. Preseason is like Kaliber to any real lager.

I think people would watch pre-season games. The Avs ownership/TV situation is exactly like the Rangers and the Leafs, where the owners also own the broadcasters (MSG and LeafsTV). Both those teams have their pre-season games on TV.

Really...this. I mean I consider myself a die-hard Avs fan but I have no real interest in watching a pre-season game on TV or in person outside of the Vegas game.

Besides it's not like they run Nuggets pre-season either.

The only preseason games I would want to watch would be if a prospect that is not going to make the team is playing. Such as a CC player or someone else I have followed before joining the Avs.

Outside of that, I can wait the extra few weeks for the regular season to begin.

Really? I would definitely watch every one but I realize the group who would do so is pretty small. It is business in the end.
