Does Homer plan on trading away Timonen next year?

What if Homer traded for Meszaros because he plans on trading Timonen after this season, and hopes Meszaros will be a suitable replacement? Next year Carter, Giroux, Zherdev, Leino, etc will all be due raises and Timonen has the highest cap hit on the team. Think about it, Homer may even trade Timonen and Shelley for Redden and 4th round pick.

It is something I've considered, and I'm dreading its seeming inevitability.

I don't really know if Kimmo is tradeable with his cap hit and age, even though he is a more than serviceable defenseman.

Briere has the highest cap hit on the team, but I really have no ****ing clue what Homer's tentative plan for next offseason is. We're not going to have a ton of room to work with and I'd say it's safe to assume Giroux + Carter will be at least a 10 million dollar cap hit. I'm not gonna get too worried about it right now though, maybe we'll get lucky and Homer will be fired by then.

The answer to that is yes. With a plethora of young defenseman Kimmo will be the odd man out, and we'll get next to nothing for him because every team knows hes a salary dump.

Agreed. I'd much rather see Homer gone than Timonen.

He doesn't have a plan that extends into next year. He actually doesn't have a plan for right now.

His cap hit is high but after this year he makes 8 million the last 2 years of the deal which isnt a big commitment for a team that isnt cap strapped to make especially considering he will only have 2 years left.

He'll be worth more at the trade deadline than in the offseason but we obviously won't be trading him before a playoff run.

Trading Timonen next year would actually make a lot more sense then trading Gagne this off-season was.

It makes the most sense. I was thinking about posting a thread like this earlier.

This could easily be our "all or nothing" year. Starting in 2011-12, there will most likely be some sort of youth movement on this team.

It doesnt make sense to hang onto Timonen until his contract runs out, so we might as well get something for him (like a draft day deal) while he is still an effective player. Who knows what the market will be like for a $6.3M defenseman next year, but it would have to be at least worth considering.

Our prospect pool is depleted, and there are only so many older players on this roster that could fetch us a nice draft pick or a blue chip prospect. At some point we need to focus on restocking our cupboards.

I could see Timonen being dealt to a team like Colorado that is coming into it's own within the next year or two that is in need of a #1.

But I dont know. It all depends on how the team does this season.

I'd love to have him here till he retires, but his cap is a bit much, considering who we need to re-sign. Also, I'm curious after a full season in the AHL, could Gustafsson replace him after 1 year in the AHL?

He might want to finish here, maybe will be willing to sign for less?

That term on Meszaros' contract sure does suck, if you look at things this way.
Homer pissed away all of the tiny flexibility we had left by acquiring this guy with 4 years left, signing Shelley to 3 years and Leighton for 2 years.

You can't restructure contracts and the next 2 years are the issue.

Next Year would be the perfect time to trade him. I really hope he has a solid season this season, because i think he is going to decline heavily afterwards. I wouldn't mind if we got nothing in return for him ,as long as we are not on the hook for the salary.

Mez turns into a top 4, we still have

Pronger - Carle
Mez - Coburn
Bartulis - Walker

Lets just hope mez works out, otherwise that looks a great deal weaker

Anything is possible! Next year will bevery interesting. Howmuch will Carter want? For how long? How much is too much? If you trade him, the others can sign easily+ our prospect problem would be resolved.

As a fan of both teams, considering their respective cap situations, I would mostly be behind this kind of deal

As long as the Avs don't get bent over in the return......That's not cool man.

If there is one thing that Paul Holmgren has shown us this off-season, it is that he is a terrible negotiator. I don't know if it is laziness, some evil-witch curse that he cannot tell a lie, or just plain ignorance of even the basic points of buying low and selling high. I wish I could believe that Holmgren could, in fact, turn older players into good picks and/or prospects. The Gagné trade showed that a) Holmgren willfully allows himself to be in a zero-leverage bargaining position and b) he is more than willing to accept 10¢ on the dollar.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if Timonen were traded next year for about the same return as Gagné; ie, nothing.

Holmgren hasn't been bending anyone over lately so I think you're ok there.

You make a good point!!!

However, your trade is a bit lopsided.......We need Koci to beat up guys.

How about a 6th + a giant mackrel sent to Richards in the mail so he can slap Homer across the face with it?!

I think both sides come off well in this deal
