He's overrated in the sense that there are folks claiming him to be a true #1 d-man in this league. He is not that. He is a bona-fide #2 and a bona-fide shutdown d-man with potential to round into a true #1 if his offense picks up.

The reason why it's tremendous value for the Sharks is because trading Joe Thornton and his contract is generally going to get you secondary players and spare parts. 95% of the time, you won't get a top player at any position for a superstar. Marc Staal is a top player on the blue line.

In a perfect world, there is a replacement in the top six somewhere that isn't Couture. The reality of it is that the way superstars are traded, they never get top talent. They get secondary players and spare parts. Staal is a top talent. The business side of things is definitely a factor and the biggest reason why trading Thornton will never happen. However, I'm a firm believer that the longer we keep Thornton, the longer it will take to get to the top. That is purely my opinion as I see him as a guy that is happy to accomplish something like getting to a conference finals for the first time and not being the beast he was against Detroit. To me, there is a distinct lack of drive in Thornton. At least in the mold needed to be a Cup winning leader of a team.

Staal's agent: we want a deal with the Rangers.

Not an offer sheet

I dont think the sharks even have the cap space to offer a big enough sheet that would get staal to sign. I forgot how much the tjarlmeson contract was but that would be small peanuts and laughable to marc staals agent. If the sharks were to truly try and offer sheet staal to get him to sign youd have to throw out a contract that is worth 5+ per year. Marc staal is definatly a legitamate top defensman who would be worth the money but i dont see a sheet being thrown his way that could get him to bite.

Now people that are hoping a trade could be made would have to look a whole lot richer then pavelski or couture. Think about what staal means to the rangers, he is their bonafide best defenseman and 2 most important player on the team. The rangers problem revolves around scoring goals and not much depth on the blueline outside of staal, girardi, and rozsival. Departing with staal would devastate the blue line and thrust young players who arent ready into more of a role then theyre ready for. Weakening the blue line for a nice 2 line center or unproven prospect isnt going to solve any of the rangers ails.

Posted earlier. What's he supposed to say. PR Speak if you ask me, though I do believe any deal, offer sheet or trade, is an extreme longshot.

Get your facts straight.
Exactly, homeboy. Where did I say he is being hardballed? The kid obviously doesn't want to sign a contract with NYR into his UFA years.

I think some around here are desperate for good news concerning the Sharks and their defense.

There were two Tweeters, both hockey related, and both have a decent number of followers from what I know about Tweeters. One was backed up by an HF poster who confirmed one of his rumors came to fruition.

And yes, we're desperate for something

I wish we got Staal but this is probably a rumor which won't amount to anything.

I hope it isn't just a rumor. We need another stud on D or we really have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning a cup the way it stands. There are a lot more UFA players at forward available and will be available come the deadline than quality d-men. We can replace Clowe without a second thought and we canget by without Pavelski.

Blue-line depth is a bit more important at the moment than our top-6 forward set-up. We can bolster the forwards. Things are looking bleak at defense.

Package Clowe (or the much more unlikely Pavelski) for a top 4 d-man. Package Murray for a top 6 forward. Bada-bing bada-boom.

Or go back in time and sign Z. Michalek to a 4.25 or greater per year deal and I don't have a sinking feeling in my stomach.

There’s a real big gap between getting your ass kicked in a trade and having a dancing, singing sprite fool you with trickery and then strike your throat before you even know you’re in a fight.

I'd trade them Murray+, it's probably who'd they want anyway.

Murray, Joslin + 1st... something like that. Don't post that **** on the main board though, Rangers fans will flip a lid, but that's what I would actually expect.

IF he's traded, it's because they can't sign him to a contract, that makes him less expensive to trade for.

Agree 100%, DW doesn't get blown over in high profile trades, so the fact that he's interested in Staal tells me that there may be a bit of a stalemate in negotiations that has caused Staal's value to drop. I mean, considering the priority he is to his team, don't you think he would have signed by now?

We won the Boyle trade, won the Thornton trade, and won the Heatley trade. Staal may not be quite at the caliber of these guys yet, but it would still be a blockbuster trade, and DW won't get blown over.

That's what happens when you trade 2 #5 dmen, late first for a #2 defenseman.

edit: although this is assuming he'll sign with teh Sharks for sure.

Trade probably starts with Clowe, Vlasic and a mid-level prospect or mid level pick. They would have to get a useful dman in return, along with the top 6 forward they all say they need.

With no contract. Yes.

Man you guys need to calm the hell down. Staal is not the second coming of Orr here. He's pretty much Vlasic who plays Physical, that's it. Sure I'd love to have him on the team, but I'm not going to overpay him or give up the moon for him either. If the Rag's want to sign him and then trade him, sure, I'd give up a lot more.

For freaking Staal? Man this off-season is warping your minds. That trade makes us significantly worse. Staal is barely better than Vlasic as it is, if at all.

If that happens, you might as well write the season off, that's just absurd.

You'd think we were trying to trade for Doughty here ffs.
