You pretty much live with the lingering effects of any concussion for the rest of your life.

I'm guessing that he and his agent will be going after an Insurance settlement.

This is really sad to hear. A guy like Kariya deserves a classier exit from the sport, and hopefully he'll get it. But with his age and health I'm not sure how likely that is.

Bad news for the whole NHL, Kariya seems to be a class act. I would not think he would come back, he has made a fortune and is in the decline of his career. He has nothing else to prove really. Just get yourself better to enjoy the rest of your life Paul, you dont need to be another Wayne Chrebet (who would be an excellent person for Kariya to contact if he thinks he is coming back).

damn, that sucks. If he has played his last game then he will be the closest player to making it to 1000 points without actually making it (if that makes any sense)

989 points in 989 games. One of my fav players in the 90's, all the best to him.

You are kidding right? I don't wish harm on him, but he is far from a class act. Do a little research and see what he did to the Ducks.

You know, reading this.... None of this seems to apply to Paul Kariya, except that you mentioned his name in this.

hes a bit far from being a class act. Not like, "I hope he gets injured" level, but I dont think of class when i think of Paul Kariya (Granted, I dont think of "No Class" when his name comes up). And, he kinda needs to prove he can win a Stanley Cup?

Kariya will not sign with a team this offseason. He will try to recover and make it for the season after. Half way through next season, he'll decide that his brain and body has reacted marvelously and wishes to play the second half. He will sign with the Maple Leafs. Toronto will win the Stanley Cup. End. of. Story.

Sad. One of my favorite players all time. Could have been huge were it not for the infamous cross check to his face.

I speak on behalf of 29 other teams' fans' in the league when I say: it's time to move on from Kariya leaving Anaheim.

He's had a career since Anaheim, you know? He left Nashville and got them all angry too, just to see if he could still do it. He disappointed Blues fans with low point totals and a high salary. I think he even played in Colorado for a weekend.

Nah, that's all in good fun. Seriously though, I have tons of respect of Kariya, classy guy indeed. Anytime I heard about him off the ice, it was always a charitable event or something with tons of class. What a pro, here's another one hoping it's not the end.

Not to be completely cynical, but I'm sure those post-concussion symptoms would be more manageable if he had received a 3M+ contract for the year.
