Because it involves the Sharks and there is nothing else hockey-related to talk about. And because once in a while Eklund is right.
Fair enough I guess.
I think he's making this one up, for the record.
If by some small miracle it is legit, Philly seems to make the most sense to me.
Montreal get's Leighton (starting goalie, becomes a backup), Montreal signs Niemi (Staring goalie).
Philly gets Price (starter), Boucher (Backup)
I'm not sure where San Jose is sending Clowe (or Mcginn maybe) exactly, but probably Montreal. I'm just not sure how they clear enough cap space. Maybe they are sending us Hamrlik, not sure.
This doesn't even deserve a meaningful discussion considering the source. For one, none of the teams that need a goalie have a #1 or they don't have a d-man to part with...let alone both. The fact that he can't even put a 3rd team in there should show you where this really is even if you pretend it wasn't Eklund that fed this crap to begin with.
I can see montreal trading price if they can't come to terms on a deal and signing niemi. It's an interesting rumor. Price would benefit from leaving montreal too.
... it may be a clue about the missing team involved. He could have used a canadiens player in there, a picture of price, a Sharks jersey, etc, but it's a girl with a bruins logo on her shirt. Is it just a coincidence? You'd think he wouldn't put that there unless there was a reason. it's always possible it was a coincidence, but that does not seem likely.
Also, he mentions another #1 goaltender would be coming back to montreal, in addition to the forward from san jose.
So it seems to me the rumor is:
Tim Tomas to Montreal
Ryane Clowe to Montreal
Carey Price to Boston
Mark Stuart to San Jose?
You know it's not Chara, and not Boychuk, and they don't really have anyone else of great quality except Seidenberg, but I believe they just signed him this offseason, so that doesn't fit. Andrew Ference is always possible but I don't think he's what the Sharks need or that they'd trade Clowe for him, but I've heard Ference is a rink rat, who really had to overcome obstacles, like sucking at NHL defending, in order to become an NHL defender, so I wouldn't put it past Doug Wilson.
Trading Stuart or whoever, Seidenberg, to the Sharks would get Tim Tomas' salary off the books, and open up cap space to trade for Kaberle or another puck-mover that boston has been rumored to be after.
I'm looking at the Bruins roster. My god are they stacked. Talk about another team that's leapfrogegd the Sharks. If things stay how they are, it's:
Nathan Horton - Marc Savard - Milan Lucic
Patrice Bergeron - David Krejci - Blake Wheeler
Michael Ryder - Tyler Seguin - Mark Recchi
Marco Sturm - Daniel Paille - Shawn Thornton
So much depth. Everyone can play everywhere for the most part. Recchi could be on the 4th or 2nd line. Same with Sturm. Right now they're over the cap but if they dump Tomas, or Ryder, or whoever, they'll be fine. Their D isn't perfect, but a top 3 of Chara, Seidenberg, and Boychuk is a pretty fantastic start. And now that Savard has his winger, they'll be back to one of the top scoring teams in the league like they were in 08-09.
Tim Thomas is a likely piece for Boston to move, but why would they want Price when they already have Rask? That just doesn't make sense to me.
And why would Montreal want Thomas? Sure, he's a good goalie, but he's on an over 35 contract with a $5 mil cap hit for the next 3 years. They could sure as hell do better than that for Price. If they are willing to take on that much cap hit, they could probably get Vokoun from Florida.
It doesn't make any sense for the Bruins to try and get Price when they have Rask besides being able to get Thomas' salary off the books. Basically they could trade for Price, dump salary, and then trade price for a puck mover, or Price +, or trade Price for picks and cap space. It doesnt make too much sense but anything's possible i'm just basing it on the fact that he used a picture of the Bruins.
and yes, marc savard, mark stuart. not marc stuart. he probably just confused them because Boston has so many marc's and marco's.
