Hartnell was almost traded to Edmonton for Sheldon Souray last season

http://communities.canada.com/edmont...rtscaster.aspx

Saw this on euroflyer's twitter. Obviously discussion worthy.

Quote:
Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini pulled out a trade that would have sent Sheldon Souray to the Philadelphia Flyers for Scott Hartnell, who had agreed to waive his no-movement clause to come to Edmonton, an Edmonton TV sportscaster, Kevin Karius of Global, says.

Karius's report, which makes it clear that Tambellini pulled out of the deal, is supported somewhat by an Edmonton Journal report from Jim Matheson, who wrote, "Sources indicate the Oilers were working on a Sheldon Souray trade last season to the Philadelphia Flyers for winger Scott Hartnell, but the deal didn't come off. The veteran defenceman remains in limbo, with two years left on his contract, and is anxious to be dealt to another team."

Karius's report was unsourced, but far more detailed.

How long before the Homer fanboys arrive to enlighten us about how this would have been great for the Flyers?

Even as someone who has never liked Hartnell on this team, I am glad this deal did not go through.

Okay. I loved the move to pick up Pronger. I understand how picking up Meszaros could be huge in a year or so.

I do not understand going after more older, expensive d-men who are struggling.

Thank god this didn't happen.

I liked Souray many years ago, but this would have been a terrible move. Besides, I want to see Hartnell turn it around with this team. 08-09 wasn't so long ago.

I assume I would fall in to this category as a Homer fanboy. As such, I gotta say, this trade would have been a baaaaaaaad move.

It's laughable how Homer keeps proving how bad a GM he is this off-season in new and unexpected ways.

Wow. Can homer actually do math? I'm just wondering. Like the old you have this much money to go shopping with and stuff costs this much, what do you buy?

It had to be Souray plus something of pretty high value. Otherwise Oilers take that trade and run away giggling !!!!

Well, if you're saying this trade would have been bad, then no, I don't consider you a Homer fanboy. If you were an actual fanboy, you would have just said something like "the world of internet people is fantasy" as your ultimate defense of Shooter.

The fanboys are those who never actually debate Homer and his strengths and weaknesses, they just think all the world is roses and daisies, and to question any moves that are made (or not made) is the equivalent of treason.

You and I have clashed regarding Homer, and you believe he is a far better GM than I do, but no, I don't think you're a fanboy.

Surprised Holmgren didn't offer a 1st and a 3rd when they backed out of the deal.

I'm pretty skeptical about this alleged deal, particularly as it's reported Tambellini pulled out. Was he put out that Holmgren didn't offer the customary 2nd rounder to go with the younger, cheaper and less injured player?

Thank God this didn't happen. Hartnell was a huge factor in the playoff run. And if he's on his A-game, he's not worth Souray IMHO.

Also, Props to Hartnell for being honorable about it and agreeing to waive the NTC to help the team.

Yea, in fairness to Homer, who knows what actually went on here?

I'm not a fan of Shooter, but I'm not gonna persecute him for a trade that didn't happen, or may not even be something that could have happened. I have plenty of ammunition in the form of moves he actually did make if I want to persecute the guy.

Surprised it took so long for that to leak...
It seems Homer really tried hard to get a defenseman at the deadline, but Sheldon Souray?!

Would be interesting to hear why it didn't go down.

Have you followed Tambellini's body of work?

This rumour is right in his wheel house...homer isn't even in the same league as Tambellini.

It should be noted that at the time it was supposed to happen, Hartnell was still terrible, and accepting a trade to move back closer to home likely appealed to him. That said, if we don't make that run, I wonder if this is revisited this past May.

Tambellini probably wants this one back.

While they don't have a time reference to when last season, I'd have to think it was during the season and not before. The Flyers had plenty of potential D-men heading into last season (with Jones, Parent, OKT, Syvret, etc.) that I'd think a move for Souray would have come after their failures. Homer believed in those guys.
That said, thank you Hockey Gods for nixing this. Even with Hartnell's struggles (and this really seems to point to personal issues with the homecoming angle, doesn't it?), this would have been awful. Hartnell at his worse has far more value than what's left of Souray.

Quote:
"That's not good, that's not good," Tencer said. "Scott Hartnell -- that would be a dream for Steve Tambellini now."
There's a phrase you likely wouldn't attach to Hartnell during the past regular season. Here's to a 30-goal season from the winger. C'mon, Scotty. Do it.

Hartnell had the thing with his wife also this year. Maybe Holmgren was just trying to help him out, who knows. Everyone in the organisation seems high on Harts, I highly doubt this was a "hockey" trade per say. I doubt it was one for one also.

Glad this didn't got through.
For those totally ripping homer (and I'm no fan), shall we dig through the archives for the "Bench Hartnell" posts of last season?
