Perhaps but this is the only way I can make both this rumor and Ek's Montreal rumor work at the same time.

You mean to say you guys aren't ready for the Finnish goalie tandem?

Relax guys. DW told me his plan.

He's gonna have Niemi/Griess/Niitty all playing at the same time. We'll just have to pull our dmen.

3 forwards and 3 goalies on ice at the same time. Scoring's gonna be a ***** for the opposing teams.

I am so confused. I know it's only a rumor, but how does Niemi coming to San Jose make ANY sense at all? Unless we've given up on Greiss...

And I really think that signing him and then making a three-way trade deal is a little far fetched...

I really think Nitty and Greiss are our guys in net this year...especially Nitty.

99% sure that Niemi won't sign here.
I think I recall DW stating multiple times in interviews that they are done with goalies.

Yes, that's what you should be aiming for...trying to legitimize eklund's rumor.

It's so unfounded that it seems like it came from Eklund.

IIRC, DW has not commented on goalies since before Niemi was available.

No he hasnt but he was pretty clear that Nitty was the guy they were targeting. I would find it hard to believe he would make such declarative statements especially since they were given within the context that it was likely that Niemi were to become available due to the Hawks cap issues.

The only thing that has me worried is that he tried to acquire Halak before Niitty. Niemi may feel like a closer 'alternative' than Niitty.

Hell of a week for us. Marc Staal, an apparent trade with Montreal to bring a dman in and now we are in on Niemi.

Ah, my mistake. The interview I was referencing is indeed from July 1.

quite honestly, DW would prefer niemi over nittymaki easily. niemi is everything dw wants, positionally pretty sound, a big presence in net. he's better than niittymaki without a doubt. DW also had a front row seat in niemi's dismantling of the sharks. if dw knew niemi were available, he would have gone hard for him. the only reason we got nittymaki was cuz a) who would have thought niemi would be let go? and b) dw had to get a goalie so a sure-bet sloppy seconds is the safe choice.

i don't think we should get niemi at this point but everyone who actually thinks niitymaki is our awesome solution must be wearing teal-colored glasses. this guy has done nothing impressive since the 2006 olympics. that DW has to reference the calder cup to boost up his credentials is kinda sad. we will really miss nabby this year, niittymaki is an average goalie behind an average/below average defense, with average/below average defensive forwards, and this combo will be bad for our team.

niemi though is a bright star, an above average goal tender. sure he played behind an all star team but anyone who watched him through the playoffs saw he made the saves when he had to. i would have loved niemi, and so would dw. kind of sad we already signed nittymaki.

My view

After thinking...and thinking how we should not sign him, I thought maybe we should. The only thing dw has said, is that he made his move on a goalie. Yah it could of been nitty, or could it be the offer-sheet to Mr Nintendo ?? to sign Niemi??. Having Nitty and Niemi as a combo sounds like one of the best combos in the NHL. I Mean think playoffs ones hot and he plays, he gets cold and the other plays, thats what the NHL goalie system is now. With those two guys, I do not see a better combo anywhere else. A finland vet with a finland rookie( now a soph). Yes Gries maybe has some potential but from what I have read is the Stalock is going to be better and if we want to give him a good chance maybe Gries is not the answer and we get rid of him and a forward for a top D this year. I say Niemi could be coming..i mean he told the finland newspaper where he wants to play and its san jose.

he says playing or the sharks wouldn't be that bad bc he is bitter of the Hawks. Makes me think he could sign with us cheap.
