That's completely wrong. Out of the 16 teams with the biggest salaries last year, only 5 of them didn't make the playoffs. That's a pretty damning correlation. And it would be even worse if there wasn't a cap.

As expected the current 'Nucks spout the party line, but the response of former Canuck (and former Canuck NHLPA rep) Willie Mitchell is very interesting.

Brendan Morrison?

Former Canuck Brendan Morrison – an NHLPA player rep when he was in Vancouver three seasons ago – put it bluntly.

“It’s amazing,” said Morrison, a free agent who’s taking part in informal workouts at UBC.

“The owners find a way to circumvent the deal and it comes back
to the players to rectify it. How many more parameters do we need to put in place in order for these guys to curb spending?”
or translated: 'tell the GMs to stop spending like crazy'

It definitely worked for the Red Wings, Avalanche, Ducks, Flyers and Maple Leafs though.

Not sure how the ducks got in there, but correct on all other fronts.

Well...I think by now the news has reached this place. The so-called Proposal(aka Ultimatum) has been agreed upon and Kovalchuk's contract will be accepted via the old rules(and it would be the last one of its kind).

Me so happy.

Except the Leafs and Flyers have a combined 70+ year Stanley cup drought.

I don't understand where this constantly comes from. The Wings and Avs were mostly comprised of either players drafted by the team or traded for by the team, not throwing money at free agents to bring them to their team (barring maybe 2002), though they were allowed to keep their own free agents because there wasn't a punishment for putting together a successful team, such as the cap.

The other three teams have no reason to be included either. It most certainly did NOT work for them either.

i think they would have a chance. Having a top 3-5 goalie that has carried the a team to the playoffs before (2007,2009). toronto also has a solid d core. and they could even make it out of the second round because he wouldnt have to play chicago.
