Which is stronger, our Defence or Forward prospect pool?
Just wondering with the recent surge of awesome forward prospects, what do you think is the organization's strongest suite is now? Is it still our Defence or is it now our forward prospect pool.
Here is what we are comparing to.
Our defensive prospects are much further along their development and much more NHL ready, with at least 2 of them making the jump to the NHL next season (Rundblad, Cowen) I think our forward prospect pool will look much better compared to our defence.
Defence until Cowen and Rundblad graduate. Works out real well actually, defencemen take longer to develop, joined by some quality forward prospects in the next couple years could be great for the team.
It's close. With have two defensemen with top end talent but our offense has more depth. To me it depends on what Filatov becomes as a player. If he ends up being the superstar some claim him to be, the offense wins. If not, I'll give the win to the D.
In the past threads like this (not limited to prospect talk) always seem to end up pretty lopsided. Interesting how there's a nice balance of variety here.
I'm under the impression our forward pool wasn't given enough credit BEFORE this draft...not that it was oustanding or anything, but many considered it basically non-existent. Silfverberg, Butler, Da Costa, are quality forward prospects, but when you're top forward prospects are all non-1st rounders it's tough for them to get respect, if they deserve it. In this draft we got 3 in our top 15. At this moment in time it's much more balanced. The D is more developed and of higher pedigree, so immediately they are at an advantage in regards to how the common poster on here perceives them.
And I wrote this forgetting about boom/bust Filatov. About him, if he can't survive in this situation, he probably won't survive in any. A coach that's worked alongside Datsyuk, a renowned Russian star in Gonchar, and a whole movement of kids around his age...and a supposed friend in Karlsson.
Don't have one of the best pools in the league without having balance across the two main positions...I'd say were in that high end of team prospect depth.
The thing about our offence is that it has the potential to be spectacular if Sorensen has a huge breakout year next year as well as Zibanejad, Puempel, Noesen, Silfverberg, Petersson etc... Even if a couple of them develop well it would be an enormous success.
