Im actually all for that too. I really like Fisher, love the way he plays, hate that hes our number two center. I was always really hoping Vermette would have become the second line center that we always wanted. He did, just somewhere else.

But the idea of keeping Fish on the third line and shipping Kelly and Neil out is very intriguing (though dont get me wrong I absolutely love those guys too, Fishy just brings more). This is of course only happens if we somehow land another elite center, or Peter Regin breaks out in a huge way, away from Spezza and Alfie.

I agree with most of the comments, but IMO If Mike Fisher goes to the 3rd line his value will drop. On the 3rd line Fisher will not get more than 40 points a year, and then we look at his 4+m per year contract and demand he be traded.

What I would do if I were Murray!

In order for Ottawa to be successful we need some balance in scoring in the top 2 lines.
Regin/Spezza/Alfy
Michalek/Fisher/Kovalev

with Foligno to be bumped up if someone gets hurt or the lines are not working (we all know that Cory mixes up lines every game anyway)

The reason I do this is that next year Ottawa is going to have some cap room so 1 of 2 things will happen:

1. We will decide that Fisher is our second line center and keep him.

2. Murray will decide that he is not the second line center and trade him. His value will still be good because he will score 20g and 50+ points with those line mates compared to 15g and 40 points playing on the third line.

Murray and Clouston will has a tough decision to make, if Fisher is good enough to put up the points without Kovalev on his line( I would be surprized if Kovalev is here in 2012)

It would also be interesting if half-way through the season and into 2012 Regin steps up and becomes our 2nd line center. It sure would make the next offseason exciting having all our center positions filled, giving us flexability to spend some money on another position(goalie, Sniper)

Might be the reason BM isn't going to go and acquire a 2nd line Center

He thinks Regin just might take it and RUN!

I personally wouldn't be at all surprised.

I think Regin is a few years away from being a bonafide 2nd line centre.
He hasn't been used that much as a centre in the NHL as of yet: it could take some time for him to get used to the position.

Fisher scored at the exact same pace on the 2nd line as he did on the 3rd line.

My guess is that Regin becomes the 2nd line centre next season & Fisher is moved to RW to replace Kovalev. Foligno - Regin - Fisher. Fisher was 37th in the NHL in scoring for centres last season, there are worst 1st & 2nd line centres out there.

You really think Fisher will score at the same pace if he plays on the 3rd line this season?

Here is a proposal I was working on. We can offset it with drafts if need be.

EDM - OTT

To Edmonton:
M. Michalek - 4.33
C. Campoli - 1.4
F. Kuba - 3.7

To Ottawa
S. Souray - 5.4
D. Penner - 4.25

FORWARDS
Dustin Penner ($4.250m) / Jason Spezza ($7.000m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($4.875m)
Nick Foligno ($1.200m) / Mike Fisher ($4.200m) / Alexei Kovalev ($5.000m)
Jesse Winchester ($0.750m) / Peter Regin ($1.000m) / Ryan Shannon ($0.625m)
Jarkko Ruutu ($1.300m) / Chris Kelly ($2.125m) / Chris Neil ($2.000m)
Zack Smith ($0.583m)

DEFENSEMEN
Sheldon Souray ($5.400m) / Sergei Gonchar ($5.500m)
Chris Phillips ($3.500m) / Erik Karlsson ($1.300m)
Matt Carkner ($0.700m) / Brian Lee ($0.875m)

GOALTENDERS
Pascal Leclaire ($3.800m) /Brian Elliott ($0.850m)

BUYOUTS: Daniel Alfredsson ($0.700m) / Jonathan Cheechoo ($0.666m) / Ray Emery ($0.562m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $58,762,500; BONUSES: $425,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $1,062,500

We lose 9MM but gain Penner, who I feel with Spezza would be able to hit 40 goals maybe even 80 points.

Losing 2 D for the price of 1 is rough. But imo Souray could be more useful. He can help on the PK with Philips and be on the second PP if we load Gonch and EK on the first PP.

We have just over a mill to use towards rentals for the playoff push. There is even enough to bring in Butler and drop Shannon or Whinny down.

Souray isn't good enough defensively to be on the first D pairing.
And he isn't good enough defensively to be playing with Karlsson.
And he isn't fast enough to be playing with Carkner.

Souray sucks.

I'd rather have Kuba than Souray and I'd rather have Michalek than Penner.

I'd be more interested in something like Kuba for Hejda but that won't happen.

I get nervous any time I see a plan that involves/necessitates Foligno in the top six. I just don't see this guy ever being much more than a 15-20 goal 40 point guy..not bad maybe, but not really top six numbers either.

Agreed. Souray is a downgrade from Kuba. Souray can keep his lousy attitude and blow himself.

The only way I would pick up Souray is if it was for $1M, and for 1 year...thats about it.

I see the reasoning in this trade:

Sens get a D-MAN with an inflated salary, that is trouble in the locker room. And a forward that plays when ever he feels like it.

Edmonton gets a fast 2-way top-6 forward, a young defenceman with 2nd pairing potential, and a steady 3-4 d-man, with a good salary too boot.

Wait a second?

I'd say we're getting fleeced in the deal, but I don't think the word has enough impact to convey how badly Ottawa loses this trade.
