Will be interesting to see the dollar amount. If it's more than Domenic Moore's $1.1 million/year, I'll be a bit disappointed.

However, Halpern has always been a smart player, and faceoff skills are always a bonus.

Montreal Canadiens centers before signing Halpern: Gomez, Plekanec, Eller, Boyd, Lapierre. (Maxwell) How did we need another center? Halpern can play wing too which is okay, but I would have prefered that a Hamilton player gets a call up.

Well, the only person that should be upset about this is Mathieu Darche obviously.

Also, wasnt Jeff Halpern REALLY liked in Tampa Bay during his short stint there? I heard words he came close to be captain.

No double W without the jew, i guess.... ?

I have always liked Halpern, hopefully he has a solid year with the Habs.

Everything rests on Carey Price's shoulders.

Haha wow...Always been a big fan of Halpern but I wanted them to sign him like 5 years ago. Still, he has a lot of experience and is a good player to have on the team. I liket his move if it really is for less than a million. I was slightly concerned that the bottom six was so grossly under-experienced.

Because Lapierre and Boyd are more suited for the wing.

Not sure I agree with that. Boyd and Lapierre have the speed and smarts to play center and they are naturally centermen.

Funny that he talks about Gomez in this vid! I like his "move" at the end! That's what I wanna see.

Nice signing. He's a great vet and plays with a ton of heart... And knows how to win faceoffs!

I like the signing. Can't hurt to have a right-handed shot in the lineup, a guy who can hold his own on faceoffs and a good, gritty veteran. Bad news for Ryan White though, who I expected to make a push to be the 4th centre.

Simple...Boyd and Lapierre will play the wing.

Which means there was a spot available on the 4th line, and considering the Habs have no right handed center, signing an experienced vet like Halper for 500K is a no-brainer IMO.

Can't go wrong...if Maxwell, White, or whoever is to get a spot in the NHL, they're going to have to earn it.

Probably the best part of this signing is that now we won't have to play Plekanec for a billion minutes per game on the penalty kill. Means he hopefully won't burn out so quickly.

meh.

i can't say i know a lot about him, but depth is always good. would prefer someone with some more physical style, but i'd like to see what he has to offer. At that price you cannot go to wrong.

Are'ey? I've always figured out Boyd was brought in to be the fourth line centers. But if what you're saying it's true, the signing kind of compute because I never really thought of Pyatt as a natural center:

Boyd - Eller - Lapierre
A line that should contribute offensively. Good at forechecking, can keep the puck low in the offensive zone, a good physical presence too and certainly not a liability in their own zone.

Moen - Halpern - Pyatt
Moen bring size and physical play, and with Halpern in instead of Darche it's much more of a shutdown line now. We have all seen what Pyatt can do on the PK too.

(plus our top six)
Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta
Cammalleri - Plekanec - Kostitsyn

Well Lapierre didn't play much center with Martin last year, so I expect that trend to continue.

Boyd I assume will play alot with Eller on the 3rd, they may share duties there or maybe Eller will play the wing...either way, none of these players have anything to do with Halpern.

There was one more spot available, and i'm glad they filled it with an experienced player.

With guys like Comrie getting $500,000 contracts I would be surprised to see that higher for Halpern.

Halpern is a good two way guy and a good leader too.

With so much on the 3rd and 4th lines I think Montreal maybe up to trading some players as there aren't enough spaces for Lapierre, Moen, Eller, Pyatt, Darche, Boyd, and not to mention players like Desharnais, Pacioretty, White and Maxwell who are trying to make the club...and Avstin or others could surprise too.
