Columbus gets Carter from Philly for Voracek, the 8th overall, and a 3rd. Good deal for both teams. Looks like Bryz is gonna get that big contract from Philly. Lets hope Tallon can get his hands on Versteeg. Getting Versteeg and one of the top forwards in the draft tomorrow night would be a huge boost to our offense.

I think we could have matched the Carter deal plus taken some salary.

I'm not sure how I feel about giving up too much for Versteeg. Booth / Weiss / Versteeg would be one of the top 2nd lines in the league. Unfortunately, they'd be our first line. I'd rather shoot for the stars here... I don't think Richards is gonna happen, but I'm curious to see what Tallon has in mind with the money we've got to play wiht and talent pool from 2 drafts to play with.

Edit: as soon as I posted this, I see:

As per @GMillerTSN, PHI talking with LAK about a deal that would send Mike Richards to Kings. Not done yet, but could happen.

I've heard Kings a bunch in the last few days... but associated with BRAD Richards. This is a weird one. But pretty much guarantees that the Flyers are really gunning for Bryz. Still don't know what that means for Versteeg, tho.

Yeah, I'm glad we didn't give up our 3rd to move down to 8th and get Versteeg.

To get Richards it would cost a lot. But I'd do it. They want Schenn Simmonds + from LA. So we'd have to do lose Guds + ? + ?

As per TSN's Gord Miller. Done deal. Phi trades Mike Richards to LA for Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds. #TSN

For a team thats suppose to building through the draft, you seem to love the idea of trading away our major prospects!!

Adding to Gord Miller trade scoop, the Kings also are sending a draft pick to Flyers in the Mike Richards along with Schenn and Simmonds
-LeBrun

That makes more sense to me. I'm guessing it's their 2nd round.

LA second-rounder (edited) also going to Philly...

Man oh man ! Richards and Carter were supposed to be their franchise players...

I'm glad we didn't jump at a quick-fix for one of those guys even if they are amazing players !

LA just need a good goal-scorer and they will be the cream of the crop IMO.

As the eternal pessimist on this board, I can't help but look at what Philly got for Carter (#11 pick 2003) & Richards (#24 pick 2003) and compare it to what we got for our two first round picks that year, Horton (#3 pick 2003) & Anthony Stewart (#25 pick 2003).

Having said that, I think Philly has made a mistake in overpaying for Bryz. Why didn't they just trade for Vokoun at the deadline?

Thess deal could set up Philly for a long time... or it may be looked back upon as the day that set their franchise back years.

I'm okay with trading prospects with potential for proven stars who are entering their prime. Silly me! Richards or Carter would have been excellent additions.

Trading for star players is the best way to build a team. It's not a viable option because star players are rarely available. No coincidence the last time we made the playoffs was after trading for Bure.

"I'm told the Flyers are not moving Versteeg.... trying to get more on Richards right now.... I guess this means they can re-sign Leino."

This is bad for us. Leino off the market. Veersteeg wont be traded. Philly clears some cap space and will snag a free agent. Brad Richards will sign in Buffalo.

Is it, I thought OUR GM built a Stanley Cup winning team through the draft, silly me!

Just heard that Calgary is trying to get Rene Bourque to waive his no trade clause to accept a trade to Buffalo. So unless the Sabres are going to move more salary, I'm not sure about this.

There's more than one way to build a team. I also said it isn't a viable way to build a team but you'd be dumb if you think acquiring star players for prospects is a bad move. I'd much rather have Richards than whatever our equivalent of Schenn+Simmonds is.

Also, Tallon is pretty overrated as a GM in Chicago. He had two pretty much gimmie picks in Kane and Toews, central pieces of that team. Don't forget Duncan Keith was already there. He made some excellent trades but his other draft picks have pretty much been disappointments. But feel free to believe Tallon is a very good GM. He's not. I like his personality but so far he hasn't been very good (but to be fair, not much to judge him on).

LA got the center they needed, and Columbus got the center they needed for Nash, and we still need more than just a center. Philly made out well in these deals as well, as they got younger, but didnt lose that much talent. These deals really hurt us because it looks like they wont need to move Versteeg now, and even given Bryzgalov ridiculous money, they can still re-sign Leino.

They have almost 20 million in cap space.

Bryzgalov contract with PHI is done. 9 years, $51 million.

Figured that's what all this was leading up to, and we'd hear about it quickly. Not sure I thought we'd here it THIS fast...

Now I wanna see what kind of $$ Philly has tied up as they stand now...
