Bruins get an energy 3rd liner with tons of speed and still has potential to become a top 6 forward and a decent PPQB to play on the 2nd unit and giving some resting time for Chara.
Oilers get a good #4 D-man in Matt Hunwick, who will play alongside Smid and Michael Ryder who could have a good season and garnish some interest from teams during trade deadline day.

talent/team need wise I love the deal... but salary cap doesnt work for Boston. Take Marco Sturm too and this could be quite a good trade for Boston. Marco Sturm will be on the LTIR for awhile this year... during that time insurance will pay his contract so even though he is injured it may not actually matter to Edmonton.
One problem is his NTC. I guess Boston needs to play hardball and explain to him that he goes to the minors unless he accepts a trade. I dont think Edmonton needs him, so maybe they promise to trade him at the deadline once he is healthy. Edmonton could end up getting an extra pick for whatever cash they have to pay him during the short time they need to keep him to prove he is healthy before they end up dealing him again.
I dont belive Boston is a good home for Cogliano... but he is pretty cheap. I bet he can be flipped somewhere along with Mark Stuart for a pretty decent draft pick coming back.
Once Boston has Souray and Chara gobbling up 24-25 mins each per night on the left side, whoever the 6th dman is will only have around 10 mins of icetime available and should be someone cheap like Alexandrov or McQuaid {maybe sign a very cheap ufa vet to backup as the 7th dman just in case the kids are shaky}
And as for the spot up front that Sturm/Ryder vacate... Boston signs Bill Gueirn to plug that hole until Joe Colborne is ready to take it over.
When the dust settles... Boston takes on 2 years of Souray's contract to become the new big shooter on their PP {freeing Chara up to screen the net} and short term signs Guerin and an UFA Dman like Shane Hindy for around 1.5 million hardcap hit {and bonuses for Guerin} between them at a total cost of around 7 million for the three incoming guys. Boston also gets whatever draft pick they can from moving Coligano/Stuart {maybe worth a first from a playoff bound team?}
Ryder/Sturm/Stuart/Hunwick move on for around 10.5 million. Essentially 4 players that probably dont factor into next year's plans at all.
The cap becomes managable this year {even if next year probably remains a bit messy}
As a Bruin fan, Id quite love to have Souray on board in a support role to allow him the luxery of being able to play some 'mean' hockey... fight some... take some penalties... and boom that puck.
Seidenberg can skate with Chara to give him someone with mobility to help him out... Souray can become the big guy to partner up with Boychuck in what should be a very nasty duo for teams to contend with... protect them by not putting them out against the other teams fast offensive line... and whatever icetime is left over gets handed to Ferrence and maybe Alexandrov if the kid can handle NHL action. It has the makings of a very good defense.
Up front Savard seems destined to play with Horton/Lucic in what is obviously a big powerful line... and might really have tremendous potential to produce a lot of goals.
Bergeron and Recchi are probably going to inherit Seguin to break into the league... this line's offensive upside rests on how quick Seguin is able to play at the NHL level. It might be quite a good line too.
If Guerin does sign as an UFA, then he joins Krecji/Wheeler on the third scoring line. I think Guerin could be quite a good influence on Wheeler and I am expecting Krecji to become Boston's best forward for the next couple years... letting these guys basically have third string checking against them sets up a lot of mismatches.
Maybe Guerin/Lucic would be flipped if Lucic struggles to find his offensive touch with Savard/Horton... or doesnt keep his physical play consistient.
To me his feels like a cup worthy lineup... so make the trade happen is my vote. And for whatever its worth I think the trade works for Edmonton too. Ryder takes Colgiano's spot in the top 9 and is playing for a contract... he might easily become tradeable at some point this season if he clicks with the kids and puts up a few goals. If not, he simply is money and costs less then Souray whom Edmonton doesnt want at all.
Cogliano is unhappy being locked out of top 6 opportunities... not a good idea to keep unhappy guys around a young team. Sturm will be better suited to be a third line guy if Edmonton decides to keep him. Sturm will probably be facing a big paycut on his next contract... or Edmonton decides to deal him... either way they are going to produce similar numbers this year/next and Sturm provides a much better attitude/defense/and vet leadership.
I dont like Hunwick... but he might do okay in Edmonton. Even if he doesnt, he is cheap and his contract runs out after this year.
Even if Edmonton ends up paying all of Ryder/Sturm/Hunwicks contracts... its less then 9 mill. They dont have cap issues. Souray/Cogliano are 6.5 and both are unhappy with their situation in Edmonton.
If I was Boston Id even be willing to throw in a conditional pick to Edmonton... say a second rounder if Edmonton finds it impossible to deal Ryder/Sturm and Souray manages to stay healthy for over 2/3 of the season and for the playoffs.
I would really like to see Souray end up in Boston if Boston could move Ryder and Sturm to create the room
