RT @NHLFlyers: GM Paul Holmgren announced today that goaltender Michael Leighton will undergo back surgery on Mon., Oct. 11 and miss 6-8 weeks.
I knew it was two months minimum.
MOD EDIT:
October 11 update, from Tim P. CSNPhilly.com:

BOB!!!!!!!
Leighton is going to have an uphill climb getting back to ...um form I guess and like I said Boosh is at best a cusp starter..so this is Bob's to lose unless Backlund enters the fray and challenges which would be fine by me.
The Leighton signing was ill-advised to begin with and when something is a bad idea from the outset it usually manifests itself ulitmately into a bad idea in the long run. Having said this wish Leighton a healthy recovery b/c at 1.5M it would be a waste of cap space to have a cripple....Shelley is the other unofficial cripple of course and Walker is handicapped....
Assuming Boucher and Bobrovsky remain competent, Leighton will face the same battle he did around a year later from being brought here in the first place.
How about the over/under on how high the draft pick is to get rid of him.
Didn't you win an avatar bet with someone?
Leighton's done. Either we'll suck this year (don't think so) and have to do something drastic or Bob/Boucher will run with it and there'll be no way we can give Leighton the job.
Too bad, so sad, don't let the door hit you on the ass

No, because what I was going for that thread wasn't that kind of nature.

I actually think Boucher is the one who will end up getting the shaft here... whether that's the right move or not is a whole other issue. However, it would be pure comedy if Leighton comes back and gets waived...

If they're going well, it will probably be a "wait for your turn" like it once was for Boucher...sort of.

Does that work out, financially?
Isn't Bob basically playing with Leighton's cap hit right now? (I'm too lazy to check the numbers at present...)

Well can't say we don't have competition in net...it's ok in the regular season as everybody jockey's and tries to remain sharp and prove themselves but ultimately come playoff time the goaltending by committee runs its course..last year was sort of an exception but that's b/c the favorable competition all fell into place....
Frankly...I think we'll survive this goalie situation much better than last year in the reg season b/c Bob will improve along the way..I can't see him crashing or anything and Boosh if he remains healthy is what he is..a decent stopgap when on his game. Backlund can also fill the void if he gets back into form.
for some unapparent reason () I'm not very upset with this news....
Love Leighton, great guy, just not in the Flyers net.we'll see what the deal is when he's recovered. hopefully by then Bob will already be in the lead running for hart vezina and calder.
What remains a mystery and I'm sure management would like it to remain as such is when did Leighton start to experience this back problem? If it surfaced before he signed and the Flyers didn't do their due diligence a la Freddie Garcia and the Phillies well then that would be a problem. If Leighton withheld the info that would be a problem too. I'm sure this falls somewhere down the middle but man if there was any inkling of this problem by management before he signed regardless...it wouldn't be cool given their experience with Parent and to an extent Emery...

I don't see how Parent or Emery come into it.
Homer said something about him hurting it working out 'in the summer' but didn't specify when. He told them about it and they all thought it would go away. Ask Cory Hodgson about weight training related injuries....

We've been duped!
Breach of contract, take Leighton and his salary off our books.

Parent had to get surgery for a bulging disk and it dragged out ultimately leading to him being relegated to the Flyers dustbin of history. Emery is just a case of our number 1 getting a freak disease but causing a carousel ...those experiences were not exactly stabilizing...that's why they are relevent IMO at least.
If they knew something about Leighton before the signing I'm wondering how much they went into really getting some solid medical clearance (x-ray etc) rather than taking things at face value as far as self-diagnosis....that's what happened with Freddie Garcia and why the Phillies mgmt took heat...
