I got a speeding ticket....from SPAIN!!

I got a speeding ticket from Spain. Yes, I was in Spain in June and I rented a car while there. Just today I received the ticket, apparently they got the address right. Except the country. It says UK instead of Canada. Nevertheless, the letter eventually found me. When I opened it my jaw dropped: 400 euros for a speeding ticket (82km/h in a 50 zone)??? Apparently if I payed it within 20 days of issuing the ticket, I would get a 50% reduction.

You **** up, you pay, so I was ready to pay. I went online on the website from the ticket (Direccion General de Trafico) and it is pretty impossible to pay if you are not a Spanish national and you don't have a Spanish ID. I tried phoning the number on the ticket, no hope. Nobody speaks English and they seemed confused when I kept mentioning Canada. Sure as hell I am not flying to freakin' Spain to pay a traffic ticket. On the other hand I don't want to be dragged in shackles and thrown in jail next time I land in Spain. What are the consequences for not paying?

Does anybody have any insightful stories with fines incurred in foreign countries?

Make a bank draft in Euros, mail it back to the return address- or just **** in a box like the other poster said, sounds like a viable option to me.

I feel your pain. Try driving in Boston. On your average four-lane road, people make right turns from the far left line like it's their job here.

I've become sort of used to it, but that doesn't make it less aggravating.

Pay it in Canadian pennies.

Which would mean around 53600 pennies, if the online resource I used is accurate.

That'll show 'em.

You clearly need to combine this with pooping in the box.

don't pay it

unless you are planing to head back to spain--they can not force you to pay

and if the try to charge your CC--tell your cc not to pay

I have outstanding speeding tickets from france, Portugaul and Germany(I was most impressed by this one)

So you never traveled again to those countries? I don't have plans to go to Spain, but I am sure I will eventually go there again.

What if next time I go to Spain they arrest me in the airport and throw me in the Spanish Guantanamo? Or make me pay the fine on the spot which would amount to a kazillion bazillion euros with the accumulated interest?

Are you seriously considering paying it?

Nothing will happen to you at all. And if you visit Spain again in a couple of years, nobody will give a ****. There socialists so it really doesn't matter.

Wow, that says alot from someone who's driven in Brazil. I'll say this about Brazilian drivers. You guys have to pay attention because of all the walkers, moto boys, car jackings and people trying to fit cars where they normally wouldn't fit. Truly a chaotic situation and I didn't feel comfortable renting a car there.
