Sather Says Teams Are Offering Draft Picks to Dump Players

According to Glen Sather:

Quote:
There have been a couple of calls before camp started. People have offered some good players, they’re willing to give up draft picks to get out of their contracts.
http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/r...ets_the_media/

Any speculation as to who is offering draft picks to dump their bad contracts?

Souray and Rolston jumped out at me as possibilities (although I question if the Devils would really be calling the Rangers) . . . thoughts on those/others?

Isn't Glen Sather further up the creek than anybody else?

Ignoring Hartford, yes. However, I think it's a foregone conclusion that Redden's in Hartford to start the year, which means the Rangers will be $2-4m under the cap (depending on White, etc.).

See the Rangers payroll before the lockout? If Sather was given permission he could eat contracts on the farm for assets.

Sather would give up Redden for a 7th rounder

If reports are true of PCS why wouldn't Boston just put him AND Sturm on LTIR and budda boom budda bing... free up 7.5 mill cap space right there.

Obviously I rather have Savvy playing because he is an effective player... but given the choice of trading him for pennies on the dollar and throwing in picks or slotting him on LTIR... give me LTIR all day and cross our fingers he returns... or him and Sturm are both out till Feburaryish... so they come back and they are no longer over the cap, becausse more than half the season was played without them.

Trying to figure out why GM's would be approaching teams with no cap space with these requests....

He could be trying to dump Redden, and hes being told that other teams are offering more with their contract in exchange for taking it.

No cap space but a very large budget - bet the leafs, habs and rangers get the most requests about contract dumping because of how much money they rake in

Just because teams have cap doesn't mean they can afford to use it for a pick

Wrong. Players on LTIR have the same cap hit throughout the entire year. If Savard eats up 4mil in cap space on day 1 of the season, he'll be eating 4mil of cap space in March, regardless of if he was on LTIR or playing.

Oh, I know, I was just implying that that's the Paul Holmgren special.

Although I wouldn't put it past him to be shopping Danny Briere for Randy Jones and a 7th.

Not neccessarily, there is pro rated deals like when Sundin signed with Vancouver half way through the season wasn't it a 10 mill contract 1 year? But since it was the half way point he got 5 mill...

He should have explained it differently. When you're using an LTIR exemption (or two), you're playing 100% at the cap during that time. You can't accumulate cap space or, put another way, can't prorate the value of the deals when calculating cap implications (depending on which perspective you choose to look at it from when you crunch the numbers during the season).

Once Sturm and Savard come off LTIR the Bruins will have to deal with the full weight of those deals. They won't be any easier to accomodate.

I can't see Edmonton offering picks to move Souray. They have $8.7m in cap space even with Souray on the books, a billionare owner that's looking to the future, and a GM that has no interest in doing favors for Sheldon. Rebuilding teams with available cap space would likely push for picks, not move them to get out from under a contract. Edmonton can (and has) spent to the cap, so I can't see it being an internal budget issue.

That said - I could see Edmonton on the recieving end of this. Staois + 2012 Calgary 3rd for future considerations?

No, but lets say Boston is .5 million over the cap with Savard AND Sturm...

What I was suggesting, could it not be possible for both players to be on LTIR long enough to accumulate enough LTIR cushion, that both players come back and Boston be under the cap?

Ie- They are on LTIR for 50 games each... makes Savvy cap hit for the year less than 2mill, Sturms less than 1.75 million?

Edmonton should be all ears as long as the contracts don't last longer than 3 years.
