If so I'm happy, sure Mason may tank again but with a contract in hand he can focus on hockey. Good news if true, now just lock up Jake.

Great deal for both sides. Not too long if he tanks, and a good price if he's back to his old self.

Good deal, not too long not too short. Is he still an RFA after this?

Hopefully Mase has no distractions now and can return to 08-09 form. If Jake agrees to a five year deal, I would be pleased.

Wow, a lot of cash for a guy coming off an off year (if that's even possible for a kid that young) in which he was pretty well figured out by the league.

Oh well. It's done I guess.

I don't know if it's a mistake, but it's certainly not what I would call fair.

Is he still a RFA after these 2 years? I hope so.

Great signing

+1. Don't see how every person on here can say this is a great deal. Just another young goaltender getting overpaid, IMHO.

1 great year, followed by 1 poor year doesn't equate to this kind of deal.

It was a gamble by Howson, and I think a good one. Mason has all the tools and there is no reason to believe that he won't be a great goaltender. If he settles down and resumes his stellar play, then the contract was a steal.

I am confident that it will play out that way.

If he doesn't have a good year this year, it is a moveable contract. Some team would take a chance if that situation arose.

Maybe Fire. It's certainly a gamble. But a good one? Time will tell. At least it's only two years.

When it comes to these contract extensions that's he's been gambling with, I haven't been all that impressed so far. The only one I've liked so far is Vermette. I was neutral with Nash and Russ and Brass made me nervous. Didn't like Klesla at all. Nor Stralman, but that one is highly debatable and I can see why others think it was fine.

And Jax, I don't see many situations in which Mason is moved. But, yes, we might be able to find someone willing to give him another look, ala Leclaire.

Who would take a 3 million dollar gamble, when there are goaltenders out there, who are proven for less money?

Teams like Tampa or Ottawa. Denis and Leclaire come to mind. The goalie-go round will continue. There is always a team looking to remake a goaltender.

The return may not be as good as others, but it is a moveable contract.

I would agree with this. Perhaps it's not a mistake, but my first reaction was that it was a lot of money as well, especially considering how little goaltenders are signing for lately.

At least it's not awful.

And he should be an RFA after the new contract, since he'll still be under 27, and not yet seven years in the league.

Put me in the "this is a gamble" camp. Did we learn nothing from signing Brassard to a similar deal? It's too much money to give a guy who hasn't accomplished very much in the league. I think we overpaid a guy who can't get paid by anyone else for quite a while.

Not sure how much I like this signing. Goalie's are a dime a dozen and this could be a killer if Mason falters.

It's good to know that Howson is willing to tie his job to Mason's performance over the next 3 years. Makes me feel better about 10-11.

Hasn't accomplished much? Don't know about that. 53 wins and 15 SO's?

He has one less SO then MAF in 1/3 the games, while more then Ward, and Price with a comparable GAA.

To put this in perspective he was about a save every other game away from a repeat of year one.

It was obviously not a good year, but hasn't accomplished much? He's accomplished a lot for a 22 year old goaltender. Averaging 7 SO's a year is putting you on track for a HOF type career, if you can play 2.6 GAA in the other 45 you play for that year. And it gives your team a huge advantage.

It's amazing to think that an off year for him is around most people's career high in SO's.

We learned something (primarily that new contracts don't necessarily prevent sophomore slumps), but I think we learned more from similar signings of Vermette and Russell.

Tough crowd... I doubt he's going to tank but it's possible. The contract is short so it's not a big deal if he does, a two year contract is a blink when compared to some of the decade long contracts out there.

In a way he was sheltered under the past defensive oriented system but who can deny his improved play under Noel, there’s no reason that shouldn’t continue. If not Garon is ready and willing to take over, I think we are in good shape. (Mason does need to get that glove under control though)

I don't think Mason was the problem last year. He played a Vezina caliber year in 08-09 and barely got us into the playoffs.

Sure he played sub-par, but if you look at his performance and his stats the defense wasn't doing him any favors. I actually think his stats were hurt severely by the defense.

Plus, it's just 2 years after this next one.

Every contract should be a 1 year contract. Doesnt everyone always want the player on his contract year?

Its good if he returns to his rookie form, bad if we get last years form. We've got a 50/50 chance of him sucking, or being great. 2 years isnt a very solid sampling. Mason isnt the first, and certainly wont be the last goalie, to have an outstanding rookie year. Many fade away. Nobody knows them yet, whats his tendencies are, strengths, weaknesses, in the first year. Now with plenty of video of him, he's no secret at all. I'd feel a little more comfortable if last year was his big year. But I dont see much optimism that the defense is going to be much better in front of him since it hasnt changed 1 bit (as far as personnel). It' a higher risk system, and its the exact same D that was a sieve in a conservative defensive system!

So if Mason is the real deal, then its fine, but if he's just another rookie flash in the pain, its precious little money wasted. I wait till near the end of the season before the next offer, its not like he was an RFA.
