Murray can't even get reliable top six forwards who aren't scratched.

Dammit, you're right. We need that Fire Murray/Sign Varada thread sooner rather than later. And we need to fire Greg Carvel if in fact he still is working for the team.

Seriously though, if they lose tonight I'm blaming it on not playing with enough truculence. Murray doesn't even talk about it in press conferences, so obviously the team doesn't have enough

It would be quite amusing if we managed to win this game. The leafs seem to be playing about half of their regular roster. We have Campoli, Carkner, Kelly, Neil and Foligno as regulars. Lee, Smith, WInchester and Shannon as guys who will see time as well.

So, tonight we see a MONSTER GOALIE duel: Lehner vs Gustavsson.

Hope they fight.

I lied about them doing the whole day thing. They usually do it in the morning. Anyways, it's updated until 10, and the game isn't on.

I'm not sure if this board is downplaying our D corps because (1)we honeslty feel that they're terrible, (2)for an excuse if we lose or (3)because we expect to win (quietly) and can rub it in with our apparently terrible D.

Personally, I don't think our D corps for tonight are that bad. In particular, Lee is given such a hard time and IMO he's done very well when called upon to play minutes in the NHL.

I don't know, there's a nice balance there and I really like that some of our prospects and question marks will get to play against some NHL caliber guys and prove themselves.

Camps can step it up a notch in a game like tonight, then you've got guys like Lee who most have written off but can play well when given the right role (think of two seasons ago when he started playing with an edge...).

Up front gets interesting too, guys like Foligno, Wick and Shannon can come in playing a top-6 role and getting some minutes to gain confidence and show what they can do in different situations.

This is win-win. We know what were getting from Kovalev, Alfredsson and the gang.

Yeah, the forwards are fine, we need to see the young guys big time. The D is...very nerve-wracking to me as a big Lehner fan. It could (and should) be relatively decent in the defensive zone, but there's also the possibility that they become unhinged and Lehner faces 50+ shots.

That said, this is an opportunity for Campoli, Lee, Cowen, Hale etc. to step up and show they have a place in the NHL - either for now, or for call ups - and the pressure's all on them. Most people I'm sure could care less if we win or lose pre-season game 1.

Paraphrasing the great wordsmith Donald Rumsfield I submit that Kovalev is a known unknown. Which is to say we know what he's capable of but we don't know which if any nights he'll show up. Contra Alfie who's a known known, which is to say we know what kind of player he is, and he's a consistent ppg player.

Hopefully we can be so lucky as to have an unknown unknown make a surprise impact and crack the roster.

Its the first preseason game. The Sens weren't going to ice their full blueline when they can evaluate other players.

**** talking is a tangible skill and he accels at it. Other than that your right he sucks. Watching him to run his jaw at the Toronto bench. He got into a few word wars during the rookie tourney.

Not to mention it's a road game - if the game was at home, there would be a chance to see some of the big names, but not on the road.

I think I read that Alfredsson, Fisher, Gonchar, Phillips and Spezza didn't even make the trip.

Really wanted to see Wiercioch, but Wick, Butler and Hoffman will have to do.
