Similar to what is happening with the Black Hawks and Huet. They are about to divest themselves of the Huet contract by allowing him to play over-seas.

They are still responsible for paying the salary, but it will not count against their cap.
In-season cap his salary won't matter, Huet will still count during the offseason in the summer cap (regular cap + 10%; and since Huet's salary is less than 10% of the cap, doesn't really matter).

Redden playing for the Whale or in Germany doesn't change the Salary Cap scenario at all.

Now the bigger question, would the league step in if the Rangers waived Wade Redden but didn't force him to report? The Rangers admit their mistake in the high price signing, but also don't force Wade to ride the bus for the next 4 seasons.

The Rangers allowed Kasparatitis to not report and ultimately play in Russia. Would the NHL make a huge stink if Wade Redden is waived but the Rangers allow him not to play?

The Rangers have to assign him to the AHL if they want the cap hit gone. It's not the process of going through waivers that moves the cap hit, but the actual assigning of the player to a different league.

If they assigned him and he refused to report, then more interesting stuff could happen, but they absolutely do have to assign him if they want the cap hit gone.

There is probably a zero percent chance that, if the Rangers waive Redden, that he would not report to Hartford. He has a baby on the way and needs some sort of income. If he was bankrolling his salary the last few years, then may be it won't be that bad if he's not playing for a bit, but who knows how he has saved his money.

Of course Wade would report. No one is doubting that. But equally, the Rangers don't have to force him to play. Later on, they didn't force Kaspar to play in Hartford, and allowed him to go to Russia.

The Rangers didn't want Rissmiller on Hartford any longer and loaned him out to another team. Is there anything stopping the Rangers from continuing to pay Wade while not forcing him to report or be loaned to any team (while his salary is safely off the NHL season day-to-day cap).

That $8,353,333 can't be used for Redden at $6.5 million.

Redden will report. His wife had a baby today which makes Europe a tough option. Sorry but he will be making $6.5 million this season. He can spend the entire week with his family and play on the weekends. The Rangers can't take away his money. He'll will collect every penny. CBA expires in two years. New system in place and the possibility of compliance buyouts as part of the new CBA. Michael Nylander has been persona non gratta in DC for two years. He spent last season with Rissmiller at Grand Rapids. He is going to play for another organizations AHL team again this season. The Hawks loaned Christobal Huet to a Swiss team.

Here's my version of what really happens.

GM X comes to New York on a road trip with his team scouting and schmoozing or whatever. Sather and Co. roll out the red carpet. Sather sends him out with his dim witted older brother to take the guy out on the town. They meet up at some seedy joint, the guy has too many drinks, and wakes up next to a dead hooker. His life is over, he figures. But Sather says, "you know, there's a way out of all this. Let me help you." The next thing you know, Gomez is playing for the Canadiens. GM Y gets a visit from Doug Risebrough. They tell GM Y that they would be interested in making a trade, a trade in which GM Y must accept a disinterested, lathargic Donald Brashear. GM Y becomes irate, tells Risebrough "I ain't no band leader" and tells him to get out of his office. The following day GM Y wakes up next to the severed head of the team zamboni driver, screaming. That afternoon, Donald Brashear is traded to the Atlanta Thrashers. All this being said, If Sather invites Drury and Redden to dinner at the same place at the same time, they should think twice about going. And definitely check the bathroom for a handgun. Somehow, Sather makes the ridiculous reality. He does it when he signs these trainwrecks, but he does it again when he bails himself out. I think Fotiu is his Luca Brazzi. He makes offers they can't refuse.

So what did you guys think of that little segment with Redden last night?

He said something about number-crunching, and that whatever happens its going to be ok? Something along those lines..

I think he's done. And he knows it. I thought it was interesting though.

I like how Sam/Joe weren't gun-shy about the situation either. I think they're slowly trying to ease the situation on the fanbase. You usually don't see segments like that for obvious reason's.

He's done, he knows it. You saw it in the interview.

Torts knows too, it's no secret anymore. Wade Redden is finished as a NYR.

Haha, I think you should take a look at his user name and then reconsider whether or not he was being sarcastic.

Don Ciccio - "You'll have to speak up. I can't hear you..."

Slather to Mark hoarsely at The End - "Paul and Ray are pimps. They never coulda outfought Johnny. But I didn't know until this day, that it was Uncle Lou all along."

This will be one of the greatest moments of 2010 when it happens.

No offense to Redden, I really don't hate him for his play or for signing the contract. But we're moving on to bigger and better things.

Someday, maybe someday, we'll be able to compete for a cup again.

Redden is finally waived. Thank God! Now we are under the cap and can get some younger players that can get an oppotunity to play.
