Buffalo - Ottawa

I know its very rare for these two to swap anything other than cheap shots, but just a thought...

To Ottawa;

RW Drew Stafford - Drew is suffering in Buffalo under Lindy, just doesn't seem to fit the system - Could be worth the gamble for the sens to let clouston have a go at him. Playing with Fisher would compliment the style Drew is supposed to play.
D Chris Butler - Added depth, size & youth to a slightly above average core.
2012 3rd RND Pick

To Buffalo;

LW Nick Foligno - Solid all around player - would fit in nicely in Ruff's ranks. (not to mention the sentimental value of having Dad & both brothers wear the Blue and Gold... Kinda Cool)
C Derek Grant - Possible 2nd/3rd line Centre in future

Thoughts?

As a sens fan I'd much prefer to keep Foligno and the potential that Grant offers. I don't think adding even more D depth is really that necessary for Ottawa - they need more forward depth.

The value seems allright, but as an armchair GM I wouldn't be interested from a sens POV.

I'm not interested in the Senators trading Foligno at this point in time.

[EDIT] The trade value is not bad though in my opinion.

I don't mind the proposal, but the more I hear Foligno speak and the more we get some more glimpses of him coming into camp jacked, I'd prefer to keep Foligno in the fold.

As a Sabres fan, I don't really want to trade Butler yet.

But I do like Foligno.

As someone who hates both teams I think the value is pretty close, but I can't see either team doing it.

Value isn't like way off, but it really doesn't do much to help the Senators.

Chris Butler is going to be redundant with all the young defensemen we have around. The guy is good, but you have Karlsson and Wiercioch who can bring the same style of game and Rundblad is going to be pretty good as well.

If it's between Foligno and Stafford, I'd keep Foligno. The guy is an absolute beast along the boards and I actually see him as the guy you would want to have around to complete a 2nd line. He won't carry the line Offensively, but he cycles and crashes the net enough to let the skilled players do their job.

I don't think the valuable is terrible - and I realize you need to give to get - but I just don't see the Senators parting with Foligno right now. He's probably just a hard working winger; but I think they want to keep him.

I think if the Sabres were talking about another offensive prospect coming other way (instead of a defenseman, since we're incredibly deep on D) there might be more interest; but it still would be hard to push trough.

Nathan Gerbe instead of a pick?

Pass from a Sens PoV. I like Foligno more and more with each passing game. He's not a first liner, but he's got 2nd line potential, is young, cheap, goes to the net, is great on the boards, and solid on the puck. And he's still RFA after this year. We'll keep him.

I don't think the value is off but I think I would rather keep Foligno then gamble on Stafford.

Agreed - besides, in 2-3 years, the Sabres will have their own (Marcus) Foligno in the lineup

The value is pretty close. I'm iffy on actually doing this though. I still haven't lost all confidence in that Butler will be a solid NHL D-man.

I'd like Foligno. He's a player that can be used in really all situations and it seems like there isn't room for him in Ottawa's top 6.

Overall, it's a fair proposal. Nice job on this.

we dont need d depth and stafford would be in the exact same situation as foligno - fighting to make the top 6. He probably would be on the 4th line, not the 2nd with fisher.

It's decent value, but doesnt really make sense for the sens.

I like Stafford a lot, but I think Foligno is going to break out this year.

I could see him scoring 25-30 goals on the Sens' 2nd line.

Neither teams fans seem to want to do it, which usually means it's a pretty fair trade. Good proposal by the OP. I think Ottawa is pretty set on keeping Foligno as a two-way compliment to some of their offense-oriented forwards. His energy is needed on their top six.

No thanks. Not worth the gamble. Plus Foligno looks great so far in the preseason.

30 is beyond his current ability IMO.
20 is certainly attainable and 25 would be freaking awesome. I don't think he's at a level to top 25 just year, although if he gets around 25 this year I bet that a 30 goal season will be in his future.

As a fellow Sabres fan, I find it hard to believe you think its the system which causes Stafford to underperform here. It's clearly his desire. NOT the system. I thought that was pretty unanimous.

It's a year too soon to trade Foligno.
If he doesn't do much this year this trade is something that I would hope the Sens could pull off.

Good value. Good proposal.

I think Ottawa would win that deal.

Maybe something like:

To Ottawa:
RW Drew Stafford
LW Nathan Gerbe
D Chris Butler

To Buffalo:
LW Nick Foligno
C Derek Grant
4th Round Pick

Not that a 4th round pick is a universal equalizer, but it's still another prospect and helps balance the scales (a little) in the upgrade from a 3rd to Nathan Gerbe.

Agreed. It's not so much Lindy's ACTUAL system, more Stafford's unwillingness to play WITHIN IT. It's not his style (or so he thinks)

Not a bad proposal. That being said, I really like what I've seen from Foligno so far this pre-season. He really seems jacked. I honestly believe he'll bring it this year.

Honestly, not too pumped about trading Foligno for anything at this point. Never been a huge Stafford fan either...
