Pens assign 13 to Wilkes-Barre

From Baby Pens Facebook. No surprises. I thought Sill would make it a little longer but nothing shocking here.

Official Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins's Notes
ReportPITTSBURGH ASSIGNS 13 TO WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTONby Official Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 4:15am
The Pittsburgh Penguins reduced their training camp roster by 15, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

Thirteen players were assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Two were returned to their junior teams.

Joining Wilkes-Barre/Scranton are forwards Jesse Boulerice, Chris Collins, Joey Haddad, Nick Petersen, Ryan Schnell, Zack Sill, Alex Smigelski, Keven Veilleux and Geoff Walker, defensemen Jason DeSantis, Derek Peltier and Carl Sneep and goaltender Patrick Killeen.

Forward Tyler Brown (Plymouth, Ontario Hockey League) and goaltender Alex Pechurskiy (Tri-City, Western Hockey League) were returned to their respective junior teams.

Nothing really surprising, but I guess we'll be seeing a lot more of Craig and Sterling as the pre-season rolls on.

Yeah. Nothing shocking, really. I was hoping Veilleux might stick around a little longer and make much more of an impression on the team. He's a guy I'm hoping that the team is patient with, seeing as how he's lost something like a year and a half or more, total, in development. Still... he needs to start turning some heads sooner rather than later.

At least Boulerice won't be around to board one of the team's more important players in practice, any longer.

So we know officially that Pechursky is going back as an overager.

Alex Smigelski
They misspelled Alex Goligoski. Understandable.

I'm glad he's going back to get the help with his game he so desperately needs in WBS.

I assume once we let go of Curry, Pechurskiy will join Wheeling or WBS.

The Ams have a 19 year old back who started all last year and in the playoffs. Alex may be traded due to being 20 and a European player.

Okay good to know.
Wouldnt that still leave him "going back to juniors as an overager" though but with a different team? lol

I heard that he wasn't given a contract because he kept asking Crosby for his "precious"

I always like this time of year. They start getting closer and closer to the actual roster. I can not wait to see how the lines work out. Not that any of these cuts really have anything to do with that.

Pechurskiy took over during the WHL finals after Owsley was pulled several times. Not sure where Tri-City is going to do but Pechurskiy has been listed on their roster for a while now. Isn't there only a small trading window in juniors, somewhere in January or so?

I have a feeling one of Sterling and Craig will make the team until Staal gets back. Just a hunch.

I wonder if Letestu will have room.

Letestu should still make the team over both of them.
Even if they had outperformed him(they havnt yet) he fills a void that needs filled and they dont.

I'm starting to think Sterling and Letestu will make the team. Letestu for sure though, he's been doing nothing but prove he should be our third line center so far. But it's still a long ways to go.

Letestu is the safest bet to make the team among two-way contracts. He won't be sent down because of the numbers game. Shero has a huge amount of confidence in Letestu, and for good reason. Guys like Sterling and Craig, however, could be subject to the numbers game.

He doesn't have a contract yet, but he could still get an NHL deal - when the Pens signed Joey Haddad, they didn't sign him until they sent him back to Juniors.

Based on that, I would expect that if Smigelski gets a contract, it won't be until AHL camp finishes.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tri-City shop him heavily. Owsley is a pretty solid goalie who isn't burning an overage and import slot.

He wasn't starting for much of Pechurskiy's time there last year though...Pechurskiy took the bulk of the duty after finally joining the club until he wore out and then took it back in the finals. He's not capable of being a full-season starter because of the sheer lack of game time he's had thanks to being buried on a deep team in Russia for so long...so if Tri-City is okay with spending those slots on him then they have the best 1-2 goaltending punch in the dub.

Where did Craig come from again? The other night was the first time I've heard his name AFAIK. Saw his interview today; the guy is a beast physically.
