Checkers are up 3-0 with 10 minutes to play in the first. Pistilli, Boychuk and Dalpe. On the road. Against Hershey.

Game is in Charlotte, but still awesome. Another show for the home crowd.

Of course, if there's any team in the AHL that I could easily see coming back from that kind of deficit, it's Hershey.

Checkers have been a machine the past month and a half though. You have to wonder why they even started as slow as they did.

Oh is it? I just assumed it was on the road with the Panthers at home today. But nevertheless, they've been impressive. 3-1 now though.

3-2 now on a Souray 5 on 3 goal. Kind of odd seeing him score when he belongs to Edmonton/Oklahoma City.

Make it 5-2 from Rodney on a PP and McFlickier 10 seconds later.

Checkers win 5-3. It seems that miracle win at Norfolk gave the Checkers a habit of scoring in bunches. All good though. Checkers will now pass Hershey for 3rd place in the East.

For the slow start, I guess it was adapting to a new city and place. I think they've got over that now.

4 assists from Boychuk. He's showing he can dominate down there. 11 goals for Dalpe since we sent him down. 18 points in 18 games.

Nice to see the Checkers doing well. That makes one professional team doing well in the state and really, only the 2nd team behind Duke Basketball.

I was a bit worried about Checkers when their season started low...

But it looks like the skill and talent took over and running away.

The defense is still a weakest link for baby Canes.

Overall i'm obviously pleased with the Checkers as a whole, but to see Boychuk doing as well as he is, is nice to see.

A comparison of Boychuk's numbers from all of last season to thus far this season.

2009-2010: 52GP - 15 Goals - 21 Assists - 36 Points - (+1) - 126 Shots - 5 Power Play Goals - 0.69 Pts per game.

2010-2011: 28GP - 10 Goals - 22 Assists - 32 Points - (-3) - 71 Shots - 6 Power Play Goals - 1.14 Pts per Game.

It's nice to see an improvement in every category there (minus +/-, which can be tougher to go by sometimes). At this rate he'll close to double his output from last season.

A couple nice articles regarding our prosopects in Charlotte today by Chip. Boychuk seems to be very, very focused and his mindset seems to be 100% in the right place. To hear him admit he made a mistake by not coming to camp early like a few other prospects (Dalpe and Bowman) is encouraging, even though he was working with a few of the NHL's best in Mike Green and Duncan Keith.

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/...n-zach-boychuk

Quote:
CHARLOTTE — Zach Boychuk expected to be playing and contributing for the Hurricanes this season, not filling a line with the Checkers and being called one of the top prospects in the AHL.

The forward worked out this summer with defensemen Mike Green of the Washington Capitals and Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks in Western Canada. He lifted weights, skated, got in all his conditioning work and then headed to Raleigh for training camp.

A little too late, as it turned out.

"I should have come earlier," Boychuk said. "A lot of guys came in about a month before training camp (for informal workouts at the RecZone). I came in about a week before camp with Brandon Sutter.

"I worked hard at home, for sure. The reasoning was I had great ice times and the chance to work with Mike Green and Duncan Keith. But it always helps when you come and show the coaches you're committed, and you do that by coming early. They mentioned it to me, that maybe I should have come a little earlier to camp to get used to the climate and the guys you're working against.

"You could see the young guys who had been (in Raleigh) for a while. (Zac) Dalpe and (Drayson) Bowman, both had great camps. Bowman lost 15 pounds over the summer and looked pretty unbelievable."

A little humbling can go a long way.

Like most of us I'm sure I was really disappointed about Boychuk in September after having built up a lot of excitement over the last couple of years. That excitement is starting to build again. I haven't actually seen him play in Charlotte yet, but the numbers are certainly a jump up from last season, and it sounds like he has taken a major step forward in his maturity as a player.

I think you said it best right there, DC. I just like his attitude from everything i'm reading from him these days. His confidence and mindset seem to be sky high and in the right place. This kid has the tools to really be something special for us. I still hold out plenty of hope for a Derek Roy type of ceiling if Boychuk can hit that stride, give or take. I think the potential is there. He seems to be developing and rounding out into the player many thought we'd gotten when we drafted him 14th overall. He also seems to be displaying a strong playmaking game in the offensive zone, which could benefit players such as Staal, Skinner, Sutter and even Dalpe (as he seems to have that natural goal scorers aspect to his game) very well.

One of the biggest hurdles to overcome and learn is maintaining the work ethic that makes you successful. You've got to have the drive, commitment and mindset to stay on top all the time. If you become relaxed, complacent, laid back, etc, it can sink you real quick and that kind of stuff gets around quite easily and you can be labeled something you don't want to be. I think Zach has endured that sort of situation based on some things that did/or did not go on with him and his mindset and play last season as a rookie. Whether he didn't want to be in the AHL, thought he could play in the NHL, wasn't brining a consistent effort night in night out, thought he could get by on being a 1st round pick, figured he was next in line to take Ray Whitney's spot, etc.. he seems to have learned quite a bit. A player can say all the right things and look good, but as of right now Boychuk is also doing all the right things which makes it all the more encouraging. I hope he can keep it up.

As someone who has seen Boychuk play in Charlotte, I'm very impressed. He's playing with intensity and aggressiveness. He also seems to be very well-liked as in one game he got hit and right away 2 Checkers confronted the guy that hit him.

Bobby Sanguinetti out for the season. http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=546463 . Really like what I've seen from him this year, hope he has a good recovery.

Checkers don't seem to be missing Boychuk much. They beat Providence 6-2 with Osala x2, Terry, Dalpe, Sutter and Nash scoring the goals. Pogge in net. Wins in 10 of the last 13 and a shootout loss mixed in there for good measure.

It was big win tonight too, even if Hershey wins tonight Charlotte will still be 3rd in the Division.

Sanguinetti out for the season is a pretty big blow. He's already an older prospect, who we gave up a bit for, so I'm not happy with that at all. All we can hope for is that he heals ASAP.
