Training Camp Roster trimmed by 12

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that the hockey club has reduced its’ training camp roster by 12 players.

Forwards Jamie Devane (Plymouth – OHL), Josh Nicholls (Saskatoon – WHL), Ken Ryan (Windsor – OHL) and defenceman Barron Smith (Peterborough – OHL) have been reassigned to their respective junior clubs.

The Leafs have also assigned forwards Richard Greenop, Justin Hodgman, Dale Mitchell, Mikhail Stefanovich, defencemen Josh Engel, Drew Paris and goaltender Andrew Engelage to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Forward Mike Liambas was released from his Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO).

I am a bit surprised that Ryan didn't get a look in 1 pre season game as I thought he had a great rookie tourny. Other than that this was expected.

I'm surprised that D. Mitchell and Stefanovich didn't get a pre-season game in?

Spits play their season opener tonight at 7 against Plymouth. I wonder if both Ryan and Devane will be back in time to lace up..

I would have thought Stefanovich should have gotten a game, if only to show him what he's in for and maybe give him some motivation. I'm hardly disappointed though really.

And after all that whining about Liambas, he's been released. What a surprise.

They were probably on their way before the announcement.

I think they're using a reward system with the young players. Show up ready to play and play hard, and that includes the Rookie Tourney, and you'll get a look in the pre-season.

I assume by the early release of Mike Liambas that he impressed no one. Or it's a paperwork move to sign him to an AHL contract. A couple of days will answer that.

The Mike Liambas outright release is the best news among the cuts for me.

The junior players were expected to be returned..

It shows that Dale Mitchell & Mikhail Stefanovich are a long way from the NHL still, despite already being sent back for their overage seasons to the CHL. Now they may end up in the ECHL this season. Both had really poor Rookie Tournaments as well.

This means that Crescenzi is still at camp. Will he get a game? Will he get a contract?

I'm surprised Aulie hasn't got a game in after he played a 'full contact' scrimmage and wasn't sent to the AHL either. Maybe they're saying him for the 4th and 5th games in a row. Who makes this stupid schedule anyways?

exactly what i was wondering while reading through. does the window close with the first OHL game or the first rangers game? if the former time is kinda running out.
i have a feeling that if he's not signed he be drafted (not necessarily TML) next june.
according to some rangers fans his year to year development has been great

Dammit, I was hoping he'd be sent back to Kitchener already. I love the kid, but he needs to be in Kitchener this year. Or at least, Kitchener needs him to be there in the worst way.

What are we gonna do with Stefanovich? Is he ever gonna improve and take the next step?

I don't know if i'm catching him at a bad time or not, but everytime i see him play, he looks pretty invisible to me.

I guess Burke and Wilson want to use those guys up (rookies) instead of only vets. That way, the team can start the season healthy and with some energy.

Would crescenzi being kept and other junior players being sent back first have anything to do with the 50 contracts rule, because devane will slide that would open a spot, thus allowing the leafs to sign crescenzi and then send him back to junior?

You're probably right, plus the rookie d-men haven't been half bad and maybe making decisions tougher for management.

very good point sir. 10 points. i hope they sign him. he seems like a dime a dozen skill set that has impact much great than his talent level. he has heart, and the time and desire to develop. I would much rather use a contract him than someone with more talent but no heart.
