Congrats Wade Redden!

Wade Redden and his wife welcomed a new born, healthy baby girl into the world last night.

The Rangers are celebrating the event by placing him on waivers at noon.

Oh Rangers. If your not demanding a draft pick because one of your prospects died your trying to boot guys the day their kids are born.

I don't feel sorry for millionaires being paid to play a game.

True but he's good enough to play in the NHL but he's going to have to ride the bus in the AHL for the final years of his career because it's best for his family.

If he really wanted to, he could allow the Rangers to buy him out for a fraction of what he is owed, probably.

Do AHL teams still bus that often? It might be different on the East Coast, but I am pretty sure the Moose fly almost everywhere they go. If he plays in the NHL he would be away from home a ton anyway.

I get what you are saying, but he could always retire and get a real job like the rest of us if he wanted to. If he doesn't have some money saved up from making a multi-million dollar salary for the past ten years, well, I guess he should have been more responsible with his money.

What do you mean allow them? I was under the impression that the team could buy a player out whenever they wanted.

I thought it was a negotiated price...I could be wrong.

There's a couple buy-out windows, and the buy-out cost is a set fraction of the contract...the Rangers would be taking a pretty big cap hit for double the remaining length of the contract if they had bought him out...sending him to Hartford means he's not counting against the salary cap.

He could refuse to report, in which case he'd be suspended without pay. Either way the Rangers win.

Ahh. Ok, I wasn't aware it was a fixed price. Regardless, bottom line: I don't really feel bad for a guy being paid to play hockey. New child or not.

If that makes me a bad person, so be it.

Buying him out would still leave a 2.167 million cap hit for the next eight years.

Edit: It's a bit more complicated than that. If the Rags buy him out next June:

WADE REDDEN BUYOUT FROM CAPGEEK.COM
2011-2012: $1,833,333
2012-2013: $3,333,333
2013-2014: $3,333,333
2014-2015: $1,833,333
2015-2016: $1,833,333
2016-2017: $1,833,333

If true, then yes, insanity.

Again, the issue is my lack of regard for his wealthy new family member.

It's not Wade Redden's fault he's overpaid, and now he's suffering for someone else's idiocy

Never said it was, doesn't mean I have to feel sorry for him. The Rangers are doing something fully within their rights. Just like Redden has the option to go to the AHL and collect a fat contract to play a game.

Life goes on, I think he will manage.

I'd imagine that even with all that money he'd still be pretty depressed right now. Money doesn't buy happiness, etc.

What caused the drop in his play anyway? I don't remember any significant injuries.

What would we do without Glen Sather? Seriously... the guy is just unstoppable when it comes to short-sighted moves.

He played almost all his time with Chara and then in typical Rangers fashion they gave him a contract that no other team would give him when became a UFA.

I'm not saying you should feel sorry for him

Sather is an idiot. I don't know how someone so obviously inept keeps his job
