I dunno.. Chara wasn't around in Redden's last two years in Ottawa and he still didn't play that badly then. He seemed like the type that'd play at a fairly high level for a long time. He's really fallen off, drastically.

Even if he was playing at his absolute best though, he'd still be overpaid.

That's not really the case. Redden started his decline the second Chara left. He was brutal in his last playoffs with the Sens.

I'm not sure if I ever mentioned it but I hate Wade Redden.

I would love to be in Yashin/Redden/Dipietro/Huet's shoes right now. None of them have to play a single game to earn millions upon millions of dollars. All of their circumstances are unique to each other, but the fact remains, they get money for nothing.

Also, if they get rid of Redden, does that mean they'll try to sign Brad Richards next year? I hope he signs elsewhere.

Based on performance, even if he's making the "league minimum", he's the most overpaid member of the Rangers organization by far.

To his credit, he often finds an even dumber and/or more desperate GM to take advantage of. Grabbing Jagr and Avery at half price from the Caps and Stars, dumping overpaid guys on someone else (Gomez to MTL, Kotalik to CGY), trading dead cap space (Brashear to ATL)...

Yah he's had a couple of those "you lucky SOB" moves, like when Gainey took that ridiculous Gomez contract off his hands, etc... but that doesn't make his initial instincts / dumb decisions any less retarded. About every other year... like clockwork he repeats his own special brand of genius. Even the Jagr move wasn't that great at that stage of his career and given his mental issues. But for Gaborik's groin not exploding last year he would've have another one.

What's his ratio of good to bad big time FA signings?

Drury, Gomez, Redden, Holik, Kasperaitis vs Gaborik

Well, I didn't pay close attention to him at the time, but at least the offensive numbers, minutes played, and team success was still evident in the two years following Chara's departure.

Redden's last 2 years with the Sens he was only a shadow of what he had been in previous years. By the end of the 2 years he was willing to take like 2-3 mil a year to stay with the Sens and they simply didnt want him on the team at all anymore. The fact that the Rangers came in and paid him a long term at like 6.5 a year was absolutely insane, totally caught everyone off guard.

Not Reddens fault that his agent got him a great deal of course, and either way he's going to get paid so it softens the sting in a big way. If they buy him out he would still get half the salary on the contract thats left. But they won't buy him out because it would cost the Rangers 1/4 of his annual cap hit against the roster for twice the length left on the cap hit.

I could see him asking the Rangers to allow him to go to Europe to end his career over there. Either way they are stuck with a ridiculous contract. How in the hell Sather still has a job after being responsible for the Redden, Drury, Gomez, Rozsival contracts all in a 2 year window is beyond me.

Yeah, the Sens believed at the time that they had better replacements for Chara (namely Volchenkov) than what Redden brought to the table, and so they made the mother of bad decisions.

Speaking of bad decisions, it was apparently on a recommendation from Rangers former assistant coach Perry Pearn that Sather decided to sign Redden. Pearn is now in Montreal.

Now fine the Rangers $3 mill and two picks. They're trying to get around the cap... right? Just because they can throw money at their problem doesn't make it any less sneaky than what the Devils did.

Redden is reporting to Hartford, along with Al Montoya and Hugh Jessiman.

The difference is, two years of Wade Redden is punishment enough.

Right. And then they can do do the same to Penguins for sending down Satan to the AHL the year before last.
