What's your first language?

I remember something like this being posted a few years ago. It was brought up in another thread and I'm just curious to see what HFboards Habs section is composed of. I'm under the belief there is a lot more french speaking people as a first language than people give credit for. In any case, it doesn't really change much, it's just a poll to see the composition. Whatever language, people should always be respectful, so safe to say, don't turn it into a language debate.

Edit: lol delete this thread. Someone made a similar thread at EXACT same moment. Didn't know!

I think itís English.

My first language was Italian, and then I learned English when I was 3-4 years old. My parents still speak to me in Italian, but Iíll answer in English most of the time.

I was spoken to in Italian as a kid as well. I never learnt in properly. I went to english school after, so I'm english, but I can understand italian but can't speak it lol

Didn't know so many of you were primarily French-speaking.
It certainly doesn't show. Montreal is really such a unique place.

If you stub your toe do you immediately swear in English or French?

If i stub my toe, english, if someone scores against the habs, french. If i get almost ran over (occurs often in montreal-nord), it's definitely french.

i'd say it's context sensitive.

Don't think that's a good way of settling it, my english friends swear in french all the time I think french swears release more stress/anger

it's because you can elongate french cussing much easier than english. Most english swear words are only one syllable, while a good old ta bar nac, as you can see, is 3. Gives you much more oomph for your trouble.
