I'm sure Zatkoff has the upper hand since he's been there for a full season (i think.. was he there the season before too?) anyways, Zatkoff has seniority, but I like Jones' upside alot more than Zatkoff's, wouldn't be surprised to see Jones take the spot at some point this season
The Jones vs. Zatkoff competition will be extremely interesting in my opinion.
Has anyone seriously scouted these guys & have any opinions on their strengths & weaknesses? What technical things do they need to work on? Etc...
Who will win the starting job in Monarch's training camp? Has Morris said anything about them? Will the loser's stock plummet?
From listening to the road Phoenix game the other night, Zatkoff stood on his head after replacing Bernier. It was just a matter of time until Phoenix won. Nick and Daryl mentioned that Zatkoff is known for having really quick feet and is really good at covering the lower portion of the net.
Zatkoff all the way. Right now, he is the better goalie even if Jones has more upside. I think this year, Zatkoff may get the majority of the starts and then the year after (if one of them isn't with the Kings or traded) they will be more in a 1A/1B situation.
Zatkoff has proven he can win in the AHL and deserves it, much like Quick/Bernier right now. Until he slides (like Quick), I believe he will take the #1 reins in Manchester. Like Chazz said, he played great in Phoenix (from what Nick and Daryl said). IMO, if it weren't for Bernier or Quick, Zatkoff would challenge for our backup spot.
Zatkoff, watched him a lot when he was with the Reign, really underrated goalie, if it wasn't for Bernier he would be breathing down Quick's neck. I'm hoping after the Quick vs. Bernier thing is settled and one gets traded away that Zatkoff will become the back-up.
Should be handled the exact same way the Kings goalies are handled... Quick/Zatkoff have seniority and should begin the year as the starters. Bernier/Jones should get some games here and there early on, but by the end of the year it should be a case of you win/play well you get another game, you lose/stuggle you sit.
Quick/Zatkoff = 40-50 games
Bernier/Jones = 30-40 games
I can give you an honest to goodness scouting report that compares the two this coming weekend at FF. I have a dvd that does just that very thing. I have the pro scouting tapes from each of these two players and then a 10min (approx) tape of one of the central scouting services guys comparing them and a few other young goalies too.
Its all in DVD format. I am bringing several scouting reports on dvd, you must supply your own discs but I will provide the content.
To paraphrase it seems that Z has a shot at being a very good NHL back up with a slit shot at becoming a true number one and that Jones has #1 written all over him but that it will take time. Take it for what its worth but some people are of the opinion that we have three more NHL caliber goalies in our system.
I'm thinking they try to assign Ersberg to the ECHL unless he goes back to Europe. That would give him some playing time and keep him geographically close in case of an injury to Quick or Bernier. They'd have to waive him but with the current goalie market he might pass through.
I like Zaktoff to be the AHL guy until the Kings figure out just how good Quick is. Granted Quick had a lot of wins, which is a team effort, but his other stats are average and in some cases below average.
