I'd be ok with Lilja in a second pairing role. He's been great all preseason and will probably sign for cheap since he missed out on that Red Wings contract and is desperate.

Well, he's definitely a stay-at-home d-man as he can't skate more than 3 mph ...

If Demers made a leap, I think we would take Moore for the bottom. But Demers hasn't shown he is reliable yet. He is good with Huskins and that's it so far. Good offensive instincts and is going to be a good top 4 soon, but not this year. From a player perspective, the defense starts weak. Adding an unreliable Demers and a rookie in Moore is intolerable.

I am breaking the season mentally into two parts: pre-trading deadline and post. There will be a trade made at some point. Getting a guy like Lilja to play on the second pair with Vlasic (my belief) for the first part of the season, then dropping him to the bottom after the trade is an OK thing. Its not a great defense but at least with Lilja, Huskins and Wallin, we have serviceable NHL defensive depth to support Wallins recovery and any other early season injury. The guys that are playing on the bottom should at least be rested and healthy on the whole.

The move gets us a couple more wins in the pre-trade session and that might be the seeding difference we need later. And ... I presume Lilja is coming in for close to League minimum ~ $650k?

Hopefully he just couldn't afford a plane ticket home, and hitched a ride.

So Lilja, if signed, is the new #7 guy replacing Leach. Perhaps Leach will be with the w-sharks and closer to hiw wifey...

Leach has already cleared waivers and been assigned to Worcester.

Having 3 swedes on D is all part of the Red Wings model.

The Wings have:

Lidstrom, Ericsson, and Kronwall

So DW went out and made his swedish D trio:

Murray, Wallin, Lilja

That's...horrible.

Did you guys know Murray is older than Kronwall?

Our Swedish defense is exactly 100 year old. Detroit's only 95.

Sign him for 525K, waive Huskins. Save 1.225 off the cap for a equal/slightly better player.

Really? I don't think he's played anywhere near his "Stanley Cup potential" that DW sees in him. You could give me alcohol until my liver is rotten and I'd still argue with
you. I hope DW can get rid of Wallin and Huskins ASAP. I'm leery of picking up Souray but you never know. Can you imagine our PP combinations
Heater - Jumbo- Patty
D Boyle-Souray
That would be pretty scary (IF we can get Souray AND he stays healthy)

Malhotra was only on PTO for a week (9/16-23/2009).

Lilja's been on one ~2 weeks (and counting).

Various reports claim that Lilja was offered $1m one-year deal with Wings, but thought he'd get more. Now he's scrambling for a job.

Lilja will be signed. He's better than Wallin or Huskins, and will probably come near league minimum.

Moore has been solid, but needs more NHL time to get a real determination. DW needs to give ONE of the kids a chance, and I think it's going to be Moore, at least short term.

Joslin we've barely seen, and is on very thin ice. I think the org wants to see how he responds in the AHL before they give him anymore NHl time.

Wallin is injured. We can hope fairly long term. If not, he's a problem because he can't be moved. He only has a NTC though (not NMC) so he could be waived (DO IT)

Huskins is expendable but the only real possibility I see at this point is waiving him, which seems somewhat unlikely since he'd be prone to re-entry waivers (which the org probably wouldn't risk).

There is also still Schaus, what's his status anyway? Did he get sent down? Either way, he's an option, he looked pretty good all camp.

Sharks are in a pickle because what they should ice is:

Boyle - Murray
Vlasic - Demers
Lilja - Moore
Schaus/Joslin

(leaving them around 4m in cap space)

But instead they'll ice:

Boyle - Murray
Vlasic - Demers
Wallin - Huskins
Lilja

(leaving them 1m in cap space)

If the Sharks waived Huskins and Wallin, signed Lilja to league minimum, it would leave them enough cap space to bring that top-4 without having to move anyone. Even Souray (on re-entry) would fit.

Frustrating, Wallin is really screwing this team over.

Moore, would have to clear waivers to be sent down, and he is too good to be put on waivers. As to Lilja he is not any better then Huskins or Wallin, he is just as bad as both of them.

Moore is better then Lilja, and he is younger and has more upside. Schas was sent down or waived about a week ago.

The #6 and #7 spots should be for YOUNG players with upside, similar to what Chicago did with the guy we tried to sign. Good teams use their #6,7 defense spots on young prospects, not old washed up has beens.

Well, I guess you've answered your own question then. The Sharks are not a good team.

When your young guys play themselves to the first and second pairing (Vlasic and Demers) having veterans on the 3rd pairing isn't so bad ...

Your being generous with the pretty bad comment. I thought Moore was awfull. Some people here said they thought he played a good game. Maybee they were confusing Moore with Wingles, who did have a decent game last night. Moore was attrocious.

I think Huskins is underrated on these boards. He's not nearly as bad as some people make him out to be. I agree he's not top 4 material, but he is a pretty good bottom pairing guy.

Huskins > Wallin & Lilja Just because he is way more mobile.

Wallin must of caught DW looking at CP cause his contract is outrageous and it looks even worse now than in the summer.

I pray to all that is holy and divine that Lilja doesn't get a spot the youth needs an opportunity to prove itself.
