The big news out of Toronto on Friday night wasn't that the Flyers went a third straight shootout in preseason, but rather the status of goalie Michael Leighton.

Leighton apparently strained his lower back during the overtime portion of the Flyers' 4-3 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre.

"He has a lower back issue and we are cautiously optimistic," general manager Paul Holmgren texted CSNPhilly.com.

Holmgren said Leighton would be re-evaluated when the team returns to Philadelphia.
Monday afternoon, Tim P.'s twitter...
Quote:
"weíre gonna hold him off the ice till the earliest, would be Thursday .. give him a few days to settle down," Holmgren said of Leighton

If Leighton is hurt, Bob's chances of making the team just skyrocketed....

Bob steps in, goes undefeated, wins the Vezina and skates the Cup around on home ice.

Haha, I was shooting more for sarcasm...but I'd settle for the "skating the Cup around on home ice" part...

Could be a blessing in disguise, might force Holmgren to do his job and actually improve the team by getting a good goalie.

did anyone see how Leights left the ice ???

i only saw him at the bench.. no coverage if he went to the dressing room right away or if he was hunched over or clutching some body part..

Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I don't think it's all that serious. I mean, the trainer checked him out and he stayed in the game.

I'm guessing they took him out of the shootout as a precaution, but with our luck regarding goaltenders, we'll find out tomorrow that Leighton is pregnant or something, and that he's gonna miss the rest of the year.

Who knows?

I saw a goalie hug Boucher. I don't think we'd have 3 dressed goalies so after the win Leighton skated right out to hug Boucher. Cannot be that serious... maybe he had to poop?

for the record, is the job Leighton's? or is it a goalie battle in the preseason for the top spot...

and question #2. If Leighton is out for any period of time or is just plain not getting the job done, do you turn to Bobrovsky or Backlund?

Here in Philadelphia we have a goalie battle all season, every season.

Didn't see how he hurt himself but his awkward style is not the most ideal style in warding off freak injuries...

When he twisted his ankle last year it was because he was flailing to get back in net. Obviously he's probably one of the least graceful looking goalies we've had.

Bobrovsky isn't seeing the net before Backlund and Boucher, not should he.

So whom of Carter, Coburn, Carle, Meszaros, Hartnell or Timonen do you want to see traded to get this good goalie?
Yeah right.
