Philip Larsen

I was wondering where you guys think Larsen will play this season. I heard a Dallas Stars reporter say on a Vancouver radio show that he believed that the Stars signed former Canuck Brad Lukowich, in part as a tutor for Larsen with the Texas Stars in the AHL.

Until I heard that I thought he would most likely start the season in the NHL - provided he has a solid training camp obviously.

I'd like to hear your opinion.

I think management would like to give him some time to adjust to the North American game in the AHL. I have no doubt he will still see time in the NHL, but I don't think they want to rush him at this point. Who knows though he could potentially force their hand in training camp but Dallas has too many D at this point so someone would have to be moved out to make room for him so my guess is he starts in Austin. He's a great prospect with wonderful talent and I can't wait to see him in Dallas full-time.

Assuming the Stars can come to terms with RFAs Grossman and Niskanen, and they will, there would be seven NHL d-men (I threw up in my mouth just a bit) on the roster in Grossman, Niskanen, Robidas, Daley, Skrastins, Fistric and Woywitka. Larsen would have to outplay two of those in order to make the team out of training camp, which I don't see happening especially with the belief the Stars wish to give one of those seven every chance to fail possible.

I concur with Chicken on the rest.

I don't think there's any question Larsen will outplay at least half of the current roster in camp. He'll need to be the best defenseman bar none though to have a shot at breaking camp with the team in the absence of injuries.

That probably is true, Larsen IMO isn't physically ready for the NHL. Learning from Lukowich would be a good situation for Larsen. Also IMO I would see where Larsen is mid season. If he's ready then he can be called up, but I'm not sure.

Larsen called up due to Robidas' suspension.

Bench Thursday or actually play?

I'll be shocked if he actually plays (even though I would like to see it)

I think he'll play. There's no way they put Woywitka in with Fistric in too.

I'm actually not a big fan of this. If Robidas or someone were injured and he could get into multiple games that's one thing, but this one game stuff is pretty meh. Let him get acclimated to his surroundings in Austin and if something happens later in the season bring him up then. He's already had his 'welcome to the NHL moment.' Kid needs consistency.

Defenseman Philip Larsen, called up from Texas of the AHL this morning, was on the ice for the team's practice. Crawford said there is a good chance Larsen will play against the Kings on Thursday with Stephane Robidas out due to a one-game suspension.

Larsen has some glowing praise for Lukowich:
He’s a great guy. He’s unbelievable. All the new guys, he just takes them in. I’ve known him for a month now, but I feel like I’ve known him for five years. He’s a really good guy, he talks a lot on the ice and he really wants to make the young guys better. I am really glad that I am playing with him and can learn from him.

Here's a radical idea: What if when the time comes later this season for Larsen to play an extended period in the NHL they also called up Lukowich to continue to be his partner?

Lets keep him up since so far from this game hes been great, and quietly get rid of Woywitka.

I still want to see Blindenbacher up though too.

It's been eventful at least. An assist, an own goal and on the ice for two LA goals. I wonder if they gave him the puck after he put the puck in his own net - it was his first NHL goal after all...

Laresn i think had a great game other than a couple facepalm moments. He look really good on the point and his passing is alreay NHL quality.

That's also how he is for the Danish NT. Sometimes he just makes stupid thinks on the blueline. But especially his passing game is top notch. He just need to get rid of those stupid moments. He will.

Larsen sent down, leaving us with only the faintest glimmer of what a dangerous PP could look like. Back to the soul-crushing grind of Robidas, Daley, and Niskanen.

Maybe this should be reserved for a different thread but screw it. Other than a couple of bright moments Richards hasn't held up his end of the bargain on the PP either.

I absolutely agree. Teams have decided to pressure him at the point and instead of making good plays Richards is more often than not unable to do anything about it.

This board needs to decide what we want to have happen to Larsen, though. I keep hearing talk about how it'd be best for him to stay in the AHL all season, yet we hate it when he gets sent down after a brief stint in the bigs.

Should we be hoping Joe makes a move to clear room for Larsen (and, hopefully, bring in a more experienced d-man at the same time?). Or keep Larsen call-ups to a minimum and switch to Blindenbacher?
