Not convinced about Biron... at all. No goal his direct fault, still, an extra save here or there wouldn't have hurt... its clear that at this stage of his career, he's a backup.
I subscribe to the theory that he could mean 6 points by the end of the season that we wouldn't have with Valliquette. I don't really remember enough about Auld, but I like the Biron acquisition.
I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I really don't want another season with Henrik logging quite so many games.
The more we see the remaining d on this team - the more apparent it is that Gilroy is the weakest link. I think Sauer had a great game and really deserves to make the team above all the other bubble guys. I would NOT trade him. He's steady as it gets and is gaining confidence every game. Emminger was caught of position several times and it was pretty glaring that pairing him with McDonagh is a dangerous thing. I also don't feel comfortable pairing him with Gilroy either. I'd feel much more secure with Sauer, one of v-tank/mcdonagh and as of yet to be found veteran presence as 6-7. I would send Gilroy down and cut emminger the minute they find a better solution.
Also - Boyle's improved skating and balance was VERY apparent tonight. he was way more effective than I have expected. Call me surprised.
Yeah. Boyle has looked 100x better than last season. That strength and skating training he did over the off-season REALLY worked. It worked so much that he has actually become an even better defensive center which was hard as last year he was already very good defensively.
Rangers missing a lot of guys--Gaborik, Frolov, Callahan, Avery--the two injured Drury, Prospal. No Staal, Girardi, Rozsival and Biron in the net. Ottawa pretty much played their best--only no Alfredsson, Brian Lee.
And Biron wasn't that hot and the Rangers were sloppy in their own end. If anything LeClaire was worse. Both of White's goals were just laughable. Someone asked the other day who will the next Rangers fans target be?--and if Eminger makes the team I think it might be him. He reminds me of Christian Backman. I don't know--maybe he's still hurting but he was brutal last night and if anything worse tonight.
Stepan has got to make the team. MZA had a good game too. I was impressed with him tonight. As for Boogaard--it wasn't really smart maybe but I didn't really mind him sending that message to Neil who is always trying to take someone's head off. That's great if he's on your team and I wouldn't mind having Neil on the Rangers but he's not so he needs to know there is going to be a price to pay. In any case it looks like Neil may have hurt himself trying to take Gilroy's head off.
I thought Sauer had a real strong game. IMO he should make the team over Gilroy. Dubi had probably his best game this preseason. And I love what Boogaard did. Its the preseason so who cares that he got penalized.
... MZA had a good game too. I was impressed with him tonight.
MZA ended the game something like -23. While he is dynamic with the puck, he has yet learned how to consistently win NHL puck battles along the boards and he missed a TON of defensive assignments. A work in progress, but we all knew that. Even though he had some highlight reel plays tonight, he had more mistakes.
Minus some serious, longterm injuries, I don't know how many players the Rangers will even have room for over the course of the season. It's looking like if you go to Hartford as a forward this year, you'll get a look at the next training camp.
Also funny to see Sauer's name brought up by so many people, but only games where the broadcasters rave about him. Minus the one Detroit game, minute by minute, he's pretty much outplayed his competition, and quietly. Still think he should of made the squad last year, and this year only cements my belief.
