really. Not a bad option on the cheap for the Rangers

Surprised at this. Lilja is a rock solid PKer and a great bottom pairing defenseman. His concussion issue must be very serious for no team to sign him.

Detroit offered him a contract, but he held out for more - really biting him in the arse right now.

Don't really need another slow Swede. Looking forward to the possible youth injection to the roster.

Yeah, I heard for a while that the Sharks would go in another direction. I'd still take him in Pittsburgh. We need a 7th.

I'd like to see Pain Train and Free Candy pair up for a shift.

I don't see how it could happen even if Lilja did sign, but that would be a punishing duo.

Definitely seems the direction the league is taking... Just surprised at the degree.
Lilja was the #2 PKer in Detroit, behind only Lidstrom. Younger defensemen are rarely that solid defensively, but teams are clamoring for cheaper and potential.

Surprised that nobody have picked him up yet. Great PK and bottom pair guy.

Definitely a better #5 or #6 than many teams currently have, but the theme of this offseason seems to be letting young players fill out the rosters.

I would see no reason for this, give De Haan a chance and see what they can do over giving another 30+ year old a chance.

Apparently he was on the plane to Sweden with the Sharks roster for the games in Sweden when he got the news... Funny how Doug Wilson couldnt have told him before he sat on the plane..

I'm sure he'll get a contract from someone though

Wait, what? Why was Peter Worrell on the SJ Sharks plane to Europe?

That sucks. SJ should have made the decision before he got on the plane. Unless he wanted to go for 3 days anyway (heard something about a visa expiring in 5 days).

The Pens really need to look into this. They could use a little more size and grit on the back end, and they have plenty of mobility to compensate.

He is still a viable 6/7 guy and pk specialist. He should get picked up.

He should have taken the wings reported $1m for 1 year offer before he tried the ufa market.

He's really not that slow. For a bottom pairing guy, I've always been impressed with how decent he is at skating and making a first pass. Damn concussions.

Incredibly stupid of the Sharks IMO. I understand the desire to fill the spot Lilja would have taken with a prospect but Lilja played well in the preseason and San Jose's defense needs help. Going into the season with Boyle, Murray, Vlasic, Demers, Huskins, and an over-paid Wallin concerns me.

Lilja would have been solid on the bottom-pairing. Very surprised by this.

The Sharks have 3 bottom pairing defenseman on their team.

True. But he's an upgrade over Huskins and Demers and can step up into the top 4 if necessary. For that cheap and for the limited options the Sharks have left, I thought they would spend the little bit to upgrade is all.

During the two exhibition games I watched, he was the slowest skater on the ice. Wallin could have been a bit slower, but he's skating on an injured ankle, and should probably be the slowest skater on any team when healthy.

Lilja would have been decent for the Sharks if they didn't already have a glut of bottom pairing defensemen.

That's just compounding the issue, not fixing it. Unless they trimmed the fat, they can't take anymore.
