I doubt he gets past Toronto. Not only did Nonis draft him, but they need all the offense they can get (especially considering they didn't get a top six forward from a Kaberle deal).

Am I wrong?
No, you're not wrong.

I believe the rule is (but there are the CBA experts here who are welcome to correct me):

If EDM, for example, claims him, and then decide to waive him again to send him down, a couple things can happen.

If Florida (his original team) puts in a claim, and is the only team to do so, they can assign him straight to the minors.

If more than one team puts in a claim, it's waivers as usual, and he must be waived again to be assigned after claimed.

Something like that, anyway.

Our top two lines are actually pretty decent. Not elite but good enough.

We just need a great 3rd line center.

Yes.

You can immediately waive a guy back to the minors after you claim him, but he gets offered to all the teams who submitted a claim on him previously but were farther down the que than you, plus the original team that waived him.

I would disagree with that. We have seen him a lot more than the panthers did. Raymond Kes Grab was an absolutely lethal looking line at times. Most were a little pissed he was given up for Ballard. If we lose the SOB or Hordi contracts I would say why not? At least until Burr is back. He would also allow Torres to start on the 3rd line and get used to playing with Manny and Hansen.

He has always been slow in preseason... but you tell me he doesn't have NHL potential.... I wouldn't believe ya.

He was pretty impressive in his stint last year.... Great Hat Trick.

Lethal? Slight exaggeration...I'm sure you could put anyone with speed on that line and it would look lethal...Grabner is the definition of redundant and is way overhyped by the local fanboy's. I like Grabner but he has no purpose on the Canucks.

Ballard for Bernier and a late 1st?

The Panthers have terrible luck when dealing with the Canucks

Hey, if Florida doesn't want 'em, we'll gladly take him.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the Canucks claimed Wellwood on waivers in 08, and then waived him themselves shortly thereafter.
You're right, I read the Dan Goes Brown article on Wellwood yesterday and it mentioned this very scenario

Grabner on waivers is a joke! this kid has a lot of talent and looked good with th Nucks last year. Grabner always seems to not stand out at camp/pre-season for some reason. Be sweet if the Nucks get him back on a line with Kes and Raymond

Definitely, which is why I cannot fathom why Florida did not offer the kid a chance opening the season. He would be a worthwhile pick for a large number of teams, although I would not be at all surprised if Toronto was the victor. As stated before he would be ideal for Montreal, being a speed team they are. Would love to watch him with either Gomez/Gionta or Plek/Cammy.

What, you question the value of Luongo for Bertuzzi?

I'm sure the GM who drafted Grabner, Dave Nonis, will push very hard to claim him.

I will be shocked if he makes it past the Leafs. I don't think he fits the Oilers at all. They have a lot of similar players who are much better all around hockey players. You can't throw a guy like Grabner on the 4th line.

Wow, where were all these supporters of how great he was when he was on the Canucks 6 months ago? I thought he was an overrated prospect back then? Now he's Oilers and Leafs fans waiver-savior.

Nice snipes, but if you look carefully it's McElhinney and Eminger (who Grabner blows by). In pre-season they've been lit up too. Not sure why either have NHL jobs.

The speed looked lethal. The finish was lacking. Everyone could see Grabner was squeezing his stick. He probably had the most posts per shot in the league last year. He will be a top 6 player in the NHL and I doubt he makes it to 26 today.

Wooo the Canucks won that trade. Especially if we pick up Grabner.

But doubt he gets to us.

Don't overexert while you pat yourself on the back. The Panthers get bent over in a fairly significant amount of trades.

I'd like to see some team give him a shot because he has NHL talent and could flourish in the right situation. I would have at least kept him around at the NHL level and seen what he could do in regular season games, but this is the time to try and sneak him through waivers. I personally don't think he'll get claimed because every team is making tough roster decisions right now, but we'll see soon enough.

Ridiculous Prediction: Every team who picks up Grabner experiences the same horrible play Florida did and has no choice but to waive him again-- He eventually gets to Vancouver, where his instant chemistry with Raymond-Kesler allows him to put up monster points again, and when Burrows returns, we trade him while his value's sky-high again.

Of course, the stubborn ego that is Burke will never let that happen regardless of how horrible he might be.
