Brodie makes the main team. Vet to be moved out

According to Eric Francis:

Quote:
Team source tells me 20-year-old T.J. Brodie will be making the jump from junior to the Flames following a great camp. It'll cost a vet.

Considering the source, I'll wait until a more official announcement...

Heh. I doubt that guy has many sources left in Calgary. But isnt much of a rumor. That's pretty much common sense.

I'll second that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brodie made the team, though. If a vet is moved, I hope it's Staios and not Sarich.

I would bank on it being Staios. How many preseason games did the guy play? It looks as though Brodie has pushed Staios out of the lineup.

If this is true, I'm sort of unhappy, as Brodie still doesn't have a great defensive game -- although if Sarich mentors him, that could change, a la Phaneuf and Hamrlik. Hoping that is the case here.

Because he has nothing to learn at the AHL level right?

Neither does Staios.

Extended look that the kid deserves. No need to offload anyone yet we have room for all.

Well, with Pelech waived (assuming this is to assign him to the Heat) Kronwall going to Europe (presumably) and Pardy injured (could be out for the season opener at least), the Flames' defense currently looks like this:

Regehr - White
Bouwmeester - Sarich
Giordano - Staios / Brodie

Well, that takes care of the question about Pelech and where he fits in the teams plans. Brodie impressed and he is only likely to get better from here. Pelech did not have a great camp.

last night it sounded like he was just sitting the game out for precautionairy reasons. I imagine Pardy simply had a bad cut. He'll probably be fine for Thursday.

The right choice. Concerns about Brodie's defensive abilities are overblown, in my opinion.

Agreed he was outplayed by both Brodie and Pardy in preseason (very impressed by Pardy in his last couple of outings). No room for him as it stands right now.

Did you even watch the game last night? Brodie was overpowered defensively by the Oilers third and fourth lines....

Don't get me wrong, I like Brodie, I just don't think he's ready and I think people are getting far to hyped up over the preseason results. As I've quoted a few times, remember Sergei Shirokov last preseason?

Edit: there goes any crediblity Francis just had....

my guess is sarich is odd man out. Likely a demotion to minors assuming trade isn't possible
Yes, we are going to demote Sarich before Staios

Most likely just giving Brodie his 9 games.

And how many goals did the Oilers score? I'm not expecting Brodie to overpower anyone. That's why he's paired with Pardy. It's a good tandem.

To be honest, the economic factor here can't be ignored either. The Flames, currently sitting at $2.35 million over the cap (ignoring the injury situation for a moment) save about $2,000,000 in cap room comparing Staios to Brodie... Of course, with Langkow & Stajan out, the Flames have an abundance of cap space available, so this isn't an issue right now...

Yes, since playing the preseason minor league lineup Oilers is a good indication of how well they play defense . Kipper is the only reason there wasn't at least one goal against last night.

Its up to Brodie to prove me wrong, but I just don't think he's ready defensively or physically. If Brodie can play well in his nine game stint and prove me wrong, I'm more than happy with that. But I want to see results beyond the preseason.

It seems to be pretty clear the team is going in the direction of a more mobile defense. I would think anyone who is slow of foot could be an endangered species.

We can afford to have him. Like you said, we got the Kipper. We have 4 or 5 other solid defensive defenseman. He deserves to start the year up here and see how it goes.

they made it sound like they had no clue and hoped it was precautionary, much like they did with Moss and Kotalik

Why do people keep saying this?

The nine game rule only applies to junior aged players.

He will be eligible for waivers at the end of this contract anyways, so it doesn't matter if he plays 9 games or 79.

I disagree... and I kinda buy into the vet being done thing TBH... Francis may be a tool and a blow hard, but I don't recall him ever stating a player was on his way out before

Bouwmeester - Giordano
Regehr - White
Brodie - Sarich
Pardy

he's not a junior player, the small number of games you see some guys play is the number a jr player can play before theur ELC kicks in

that is a good point, although I would have still prefered Pelech on the team
