Next up is Derek Forbort, and we think he might have the most long-term upside in this class. At 6-4, 200 pounds, he's a very smooth skater with great footwork who is just scratching the surface of his potential. He came into the U.S. National Team Development program from Minnesota high school this year, and the coaches asked him to concentrate on playing a disciplined, mistake-free game in his own end — which he did. But with his crisp passes and quick puck movement, we think there's some hidden offensive upside there, and also a mean streak that he has downplayed this season.
TSN had him at 11:
Bob McKenzie: Derek Forbort isn’t as physically intimidating as U.S. Under-18 teammate Jarred Tinordi and he’s not as offensively gifted as teammate Jonathan Merrill and he doesn’t possess the hardest slapshot in the draft like teammate Justin Faulk, but with his size and mobility, scouts believe Forbort has greater potential than any of the stellar blueliners on what may be the best ever U.S. Under-18 squad and, therefore, is a legit threat to be a Top 10 pick.
I'm pretty sure Lombardi has something cooking with Kovalchuk.
To trade a defenseman without the knowledge of an offensive man coming doesn't make too much sense.
This kid is a stud, could have been a top 5 pick. Has unlimited potential and should be a top pair defenseman. You guys got great value by picking him.
No offense to an 18 year-old kid, but I don't like the pick for LA: they need scoring, not another D. Even though Forbort is a D-man instead of a forward, the way his profile reads it sounds like 2003 and Hugh Jessiman all over again....

they don't really need scoring.. but even if they did what does that have to do with the draft?
I don't think pick means anything for our current prospects. This looks to me like a clear BPA. Guy dropped due to some draft insanity and we made a play to get him.
Welcome to LA, Derek!!! Most of us were hoping for a forward so, the trade up to pick a dman was quite the shock. However, now that I'm over the shock of picking a dman, I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing you in a kings uni.
Just remember to kick the crap out of Fowler whenever we play the dux!!!
