Why the hell would Leafs claim him? We are already paying a third liner 3 million, no need to add another to the list.

Most definitely one of the casualties of the Kovy signing but more importantly how Gms are able to fix their mistakes by just dumping a players into the minors or Europe. Sure he will still make the same money, but not playing in the top league in the world. Really sucks.

There's a need in T.O. but the salary doesn't fit. They are at the cap right now and sending Finger down would give room to add Zubrus but would leave them handcuffed. The Leafs would be unable to call up Kadri or any other high priced prospects. All this adds up to won't happen. More likely Zubrus clears and a deal is worked out.

I'm not 100% sure where they are at cap-wise with Zubrus out (and Sal on LTIR). They don't bank cap-space with Salvador's LTIR so i suspect they will over the cap again if/when he returns.

they better have signed Parise to have done this, because it would be the only logical reason to... to make the posting limit for next season.

Paajarvi - Gagner - Hemsky
Penner - Cogliano - Brule
Hall - Horcoff - Eberle
Jones/Mac - Fraser - Stortini

Don't see it unless he plays 4th line LW.

The Leafs are unlikely to pick him off waivers unless he is re-called at 50%. The problem with Zubrus is that he has 3 years remaining on his contract with a caphit of 3.4 million/season and 3rd line production. Hard to justify picking him off waivers at this point unless a team is decimated with injuries.

If he wasn't signed for two more years (beyond this season), I think he'd definitely be claimed. As it is, I don't know how many teams are willing (and financially able) to add $3.4m in cap/salary for the next three years.

He probably will get claimed. Based off of Lou's comments, they didn't want to waive him and send him to Albany. There has to be a taker out there for him somewhere though, and he'll go there.

Pretty much. Free agent prices have just gone down. For instance, Lombardi, coming off a ~55point season, only pulled in $100k more this offseason than Zubrus currently makes.

He is 32 and should be very useful for pretty much every team in the league. Someone will pick him up.

2nd line C. He put up the same numbers as Cogliano in 30+ less games. He'd be a nice fit with Eberle and Hall. Provides size, experience, and 2-way play. He's probably better than Horcoff all things considered as well.

Of the teams that might be interested, you're ignoring how few teams have $3.4m in cap space right now (Toronto, etc.). After you eliminate the teams that don't have that much space, you still need to eliminate the teams that simply don't have the financial ability to add $3.4m (NYI, etc.).

Personally, I think he clears. Maybe the Devils can make a move where they trade him for someone earning $1-2m, with the Devils sending that player earning less than Zubrus to the minors.

If they waive Finger it's basically a wash for Zubrus. If they want to have the cap space in the future, they can waive Zubrus.

I don't see any downside, other than losing Finger (which in my books is a positive).

That is ridiculously tight going with a 20 man roster and <200K in cap-space. If you encounter injuries you have to hope they are LTIR and rarely that is the case. I doubt the Devils would even consider cutting it so fine. Salvador is on LTIR now so that buys them time but when he returns they will have to dump someone.

Yeah, and it will probably be Salvador unless not one of Urbom, Taormina, and Corrente is capable of playing in the NHL.

Edmonton should claim him, he would be a massive upgrade to their 3rd line. He should continue to be a 40pt guy.

It still hand-cuffs the Leafs come the off-season when all one-way salaries count to the cap in the off-season (ie. with Finger in the minors). I can't see Burke at this stage picking him off waivers. He would have had to waive Finger already to do so wouldn't he?
