2010-2011 NHL Predictions

The experts have made their picks, now it's your turn. Who do you see raising Lord Stanley's Cup? Who do you see in the basement? Pick 1-15 in both conferences and the playoffs and we'll see how amazingly awesome everyone's picks are in April. Well that or laugh at them.

I hope I didn't make any stupid seeding mistakes, I just lined them up on gut feel and don't know the eastern divisions really well.

Technically if you're doing it for the playoffs, Pittsburgh can't be third since they play in the Atlantic with number two New Jersey. That would go to Ottawa (and in CT's case, Buffalo).

WAS and TBL beat up on the weak Southeast division. Northeast also looks a little weak and I'm taking BUF as they have Miller and a good D. BOS will sink with injuries but has great goalies and could rise late, and OTT is strong up front. I have NJD edging PIT and PHI because I think bringing in Kovalchuk and Volchenkov will more than make up for the loss of Martin.

1. Vancouver

VAN is going to beat up on the weak Northwest division and I think CGY will have a lot of bounceback players with something to prove. CHI is a lot weaker so DET will regain their division and STL sneaks in. SJS won't be able to beat up on their division as much and LAK and PHX both get in.

For the Cup I will say Vancouver over Buffalo. I just think that strong defense and goaltending will make a bit of a return this year.

I actually have rationale...

My predictions are going to be somewhat off, all things considered from what I have heard the “experts” say time and again on XM Home Ice. I’ve been listening to the pundits all summer and there are things that I agree with and things that I don’t agree with.

First, the East:
1. Buffalo
2. Tampa Bay
3. Philadelphia
4. Pittsburgh
5. Boston
6. Washington
7. New Jersey
8. Toronto
--------------
9. Montreal
10. Atlanta
11. Rangers
12. Ottawa
13. Carolina
14. Florida
15. Islanders
First, goal tending is going to be an issue for Washington, Ottawa, and Montreal. New Jersey will fall because this is the year that Brodeur gets injured again and is out for 30+ games. Hedberg will falter a little bit and the slip. Washington may have the scoring leaders, but they have no veteran net presence and Varlomov and Neuvirth are going to choke at times. I don’t see them being the massive favorites to win the East this year. There are too many players in Buffalo on contract years or needing to prove themselves. Vanek will be pushing 40 goals this season. In Philly, with the confidence from the play-offs last year, Boucher and Leighton play solid all season. At the trade deadline, one of them will be traded to Florida for Vokoun in a low level prospect deal. Their scoring is scary and I was almost tempted to put them ahead of Buffalo.
Tampa Bay is going to surprise everyone. Toronto is going to make the play-offs. Gigeure looks awesome in the pre-season and with the D in front of him, they will tend to be a low scoring team, but they will also have a low GAA. Boston will continue to be randomly solid, scoring the fewest goals, but also giving up the fewest.

The bottom 7 are; Montreal will loathe that Gauthier kept Price. Atlanta will be 2 or 3 points out of it this season, but back in the following season. Gaborik will be hurt for 20 games this year, which will put the Rangers in a weak spot heading into the trade deadline.

Unfortunately, the East bad, is bad enough that The Islanders and Panthers will have higher draft picks than the worst in the West.

Now, for the West;
1. Vancouver (President’s Trophy)
2. Los Angeles
3. St. Louis
4. Detroit
5. Phoenix
6. Chicago
7. San Jose
8. Nashville
---------------
9. Edmonton
10. Columbus
11. Calgary
12. Anaheim
13. Dallas
14. Colorado
15. Minnesota
First, let me say this; I think this season will indeed see four Northwest Division teams out of the play-off hunt.
Edmonton will almost make it, but it will be a tough stretch for Calgary.
Colorado is going to see a few sophomore slumps and Anderson isn’t going to be standing on his head this year. They won’t catch anyone by surprise at the start of the season and at the point where they started to slump last season, they won’t have the benefit of having a major points lead on the rest of the conference.
Minnesota will get off to a very slow start, Richards will not get fired until Christmas, at which point it will be “playing to lose” for the rest of the season. We will be the biggest sellers come the trade deadline. Burns, Brunette, Miettinen, Kobasew, Theodore, and possibly even Schultz will be dealt. If Richards is fired ten games in and someone like Therrien does take over, then I would say that Edmonton and Minnesota switch places. Otherwise, in Richards system, Edmonton is going to flat out own the Wild this year. Remember, we have trouble against Khabibulin and that young Edmonton team just has far, far too much speed for this Wild roster to counter. We will go 3 and 3 against Calgary, with some cries during the three losses about why didn’t we pick up Jokinen? But he’ll disappear again and make Calgary fans ask “Why did we sign Jokinen?” Against Colorado, we’ll be much better scouted this year, and the likes of Duchene, etc, will simply own a Richards system. Again, if we have a more defensive minded coach, Colorado won’t be able to break through the neutral zone and it’ll be like watching two Lemaire style teams going at it.
Vancouver will dominate the NW, therefore dropping the end point totals for the rest of the division. The Wild won’t solve Luongo this season at all. Vancouver is just stacked for a deep play off run again. They won’t have Chicago to worry about so much in the post season and will easily knock off teams like Nashville and or San Jose. My money is on Vancouver going to the cup final against Philly, with Philly getting the cup.

I have San Jose falling a lot in the standings this season primarily because they don’t have a solid D and I consider their goal tending to be suspect. I don’t have faith in Nittymaki or Niemi to be ready to either take back a #1 role or step into a full time #1 role. Neither one are regular season Nabokov-esque. Chicago will also get off to a slow start, because their bottom six are suspect, their bottom pairing D is suspect, and it’s going take some gelling for Turco to fit into that system. They’ve already shown instances of Turco and Keith mixing signals during the post season. With Campbell out to start the season, they are going to have their lack of D depth exposed. Seriously, Scott in a consistent bottom pairing role? With Leddy? Both of these teams are going to see their GAA go up.

St. Louis is my Tampa in the west this season. Halak is going to make Montreal fans cry all season long as he consistently gets the wins. The team in front of him is stacked with talent and you will see people like Boyes cresting 40 goals again, Perron will just be a monster on the ice, and Johnson will be Norris trophy candidate material this season.

Tippet will do another amazing job coaching a semi mediocre roster. Detroit is going to be as steady as ever and Nashville will prove once again, that a first round exit isn’t necessarily a bad thing, when you’ve been in the post-season as much as they’ve been.

Depends on the flavor of message boards...

You can either bookmark a thread, save it as a favorite, follow a thread or in the case of this flavor "subscribe" to it.

By subscribing, it will give you the option to allow insta-email, daily email, or none, but it will also save it to your control panel as a subscribed to thread.

Meaning... Come April 15th... I necro-bump!

lol.

I always am curious as to how accurate our assessments of teams are going into the season, at the end. The guys on NHL Home Ice, make predictions, but rarely recall them once the season ended. The biggest thing I've heard all summer, leading into this season is how no one picked Colorado to finish in a play-off spot, instead, having them finishing last in the west. Same with Phoenix.

Hint: Saco and Tippet are both defensive minded coaches.

LOL
