At face value this is a good trade for us because Hordichuk is better than Peters. However, there are 2 things that annoy me.

1. So this basically makes that trade ballard for bernier, howden, and hordichuk.... since IMO hordichuk has grabner's spot.

2. Didn't we just not sign Gudbranson because we don't have enough money? yet we spend 800K on Hordichuk instead of Peters on his 2 way deal, not to mention the money wasted on Paetsch and the money saved on Grabner. All that added up had to be enough for Gudbranson.

This is awesome, I love Hordi! Much rather have him than Peters. Welcome back!

I think this is what a lot of people are jumping to conclusions on, and I think is incorrect. Nowhere has it been said that the Panthers didn't have enough money. What has been said is that they didn't have the budget too accomodate the bonuses that Gudbranson wanted.

Again, we don't know how much Gud wanted, and let's say he wanted the moon, we don't know if the Panthers would have even budged in that case even if they did have the money to do so. But certainly one can assume that Gud wanted an amount that the Panthers didn't think was fair. Again, we don't have any details, so that's why this is all just speculatory talk. Maybe they have 3.3M left in their budget, but they just don't think that Gud deserves the amount that he wanted at this point in time(whatever he wanted). There are precedents for the amount a #3 pick gets paid, I don't see why the Panthers should have to bend over backwards and pay him like a #1 pick, if that was the case. I think a lot of people are just quick to pounce on the Panthers in this incident. When we really aren't privy to any information about this at all basically.

And I know I'm probably in the minority, but I would have been happy just with the 1st for Ballard and getting rid of that contract. Bernier and Grabner were just bonuses for me.

Exactly! I keep hearing how we lost out on the trade just because Grabner is gone. Now I admit it is somewhat disappointing, but the trade of Ballard for a 1st round pick is a clear win for us in my eyes. And I agree that Bernier & Grabner were just bonuses.

While I liked Ballard, getting a defenseman like that is easy to find, and for even a better price/contract.

the first rd pick was CONDITIONAL! why would a conditional pick be the main part of the trade.?

What was conditional about it? If Grabner was a 30 goal guy?

Well, that's not happening.

Conditional or not. This year, next year, three years from now, 7th overall, 30th overall...

Any 1st round pick for Ballard is a win (again, not saying I'm right, just my opinion).

I think he meant the Canucks 1st in 2010 was the conditional part of the deal. They were hoping that Jared Tinordi, a USNTDP Defenceman, would fall to 25. Luckily Montreal jumped the gun and took him a few picks earlier. Hence the pick came over to us.

I think there's some confusion about the pick. We always had a 1st round pick. The issue was whether it would be 2010 or 2011. If the Canucks could have gotten the player they wanted at #25, then the pick would have moved over to 2011. But since that player wasn't there, we got the 2010 one. The player widely believed to be the one the Nucks were after was Jarred Tinordi as TH pointed out.

No, he most certainly did not, it was an even fight. Neither guy, and edge can go to Peters, but not a "clear win."

yeah i liked the hordi deal.. we need more grit players that can preform...

we need to start developing bigger and grittier players and with his veteran presence hopefully it rubs off on some players...

we have to much speed /stick checking and not enough hitting/forecheck..

Hordi has a great heart, and tries extremly hard.

But he was god awful in vancouver, he has no speed, always late on hits, decent fighter, but the worst part about him was his stupid penalties he took, over, and over, and over.

I hope he works out in florida again, His heart is most definitely there every night

Bottom line.. this a good deal for the Panthers, as Hordichuk is a decent middle / light-heavy which is not an embarrassment on the ice. He is a capable winger, who can check and bang along the boards... Peters can drop the gloves if the Canucks need a legitimate heavyweight... which is at most 5 - 10 games a year, and 3 - 5 minutes a night... Hordichuk is going to play a lot more games, and a lot more minutes...
